Love my AimTraks!
« on: October 18, 2016, 07:22:07 pm »
Just installed dual AimTraks with recoil on my MAME cabinet and couldn't be happier!  One of the easiest, if a bit costly, adds beyond regular joysticks (vs. having to rework my control panel for a trackball, spinner, etc.).  Setup was much easier than I expected.

I'd read so many threads where people seemed to have issues so I was a bit afraid to spend that much money, but no regrets at this point.

I love my dual AT's to.

Same as most other things they can be great if you invest the time and effort into them :)

I modded some "named" arcade gun knockoffs with aimtraks. At first I liked it, but I don't like constantly re-calibrating. It's not the fault of the aimtraks though; it is a problem with IR guns in general.

It cost like 600 to make 2. I might try to unload them.

They shouldn't need recalibrating that often unless you are moving about.

I only play them when I have friends or family, and we switch off. Switching off requires the re-calibration, and that is just a bit of a pain to do. Actually even when I play by myself I re-calibrate each time I come back and pick the gun up.

You should not need to recalibrate after a re boot if you are in same position etc.

I've only had them set up for about a week but played several games and the PC it's running on has been shut down and restarted several time since I installed them, and I have not needed to recalibrate yet.

In my opinion, it's a matter of expectations.
Those of us who grew up with true CRT light guns expect that anyone should just be able to pick up the gun, stand wherever they want, & have it be accurate enough to use the gun sights (no on-screen crosshairs).
Anything less than that ruins the games for me.

Andy designed the Aim-Traks with lots of input from the community here and they are as good as it gets for consumer IR guns.
I feel bad saying that they fall short of my expectations, but they do.
When someone asks if they should add Aim-Traks to their cab I feel obligated to give them a heads up that it won't be the original CRT gun experience.
That's not saying it's a bad product or poorly designed.  It's better than anything else on the market.
It just isn't the original arcade gun experience that I'm trying to re-create.

I grew up with CRT guns to but unless you are running on a CRT then we all know its just not going to happen!

You cant really compare the 2 as they are Both very different animals and dont let nostalgia cloud your memories the old guns had issues to lol

Until there is a better way i really do believe the AT's are the best you will get and I have tried lots of them!!

The thing is they are easy to calibrate and once they are they hold it very well unless you change positions.

Thats the best you are going to get.

Quick question regarding recalibrating the AimTraks.  Just wondering for future reference if/when I do need to recalibrate.  Some games have their own in-game calibration too, accessed through F2 usually.  If I recalibrate the guns in Windows, do I need to repeat the in-game calibrations too?

It took me a couple of hours to get through all the game listed in the AimTrak MAME guide and configure them so that when friends come over they can just play.  I really don't want to have repeat all those calibrations.

Once you have calibrated them on the in game service menus you dont have to do them again.
You just have to re calibrate the actual gun in the normal way if required.

Badmouth explained it better. If I want the cross-hair and mouse to line up perfectly, then I need to re-calibrate each time the gun is picked up. Rarely am I in the exact spot when I play. Raising and lowering my arm also offsets it a bit.

I am not knocking the aimtraks. They're really great for IR sensors. However, IR sensors are just not good enough. Targeting games like point blank are not fun when the guns are off even a little. Duck Hunt is near impossible to play.

I haven't tried Duck Hunt yet.  But I will say, the games I've played I do not try to sight the gun itself.  I use the crosshairs and I find it fine.  I'll have to try Duck Hunt.

I have dual Aimtraks also, and I find that calibration comes few and far between. The only way I could get most people to play without calibrating each time is to leave the crosshairs on all the games. That way it's more fun than frustrating. I am interested in adding the recoil. Can anyone pint me in the right direction?

Do you have recoil ready guns?

If not you have to buy the kit from Ultimarc plus the PSU's which are separate.

All I have are the regular Aimtraks. I haven't purchased the recoil kits yet.

Now that Ultimarc sells them pre-build with recoil, I got those.  Works great!  But Ultimarc sells the parts on their web site.  Depending how old your guns are, you may or may not need new gun shells.

If you're in the US, I had a hard time finding an appropriate power supply.  Ultimarc points to one on the UK Ebay site, but I could not find any equivalent on the US Ebay site.  Searching the US Amazon site, I found and ordered this one.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G8CX10Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
