I Love The Monster Hero: A Toxic Crusaders Cabaret
« on: October 15, 2016, 03:27:02 pm »
So I started to work on a new Nintendo cabaret. I fudged two very important cuts. The back bottom of the triangle and the front bottom are the same height. I decided instead of starting from scratch I'm just gonna run with it. It was originally going to be a Gradius themed cab but I'm going to save that for another day.

I'm a huge fan of Troma stuff and I decided what better way to salvage a botched project than to theme it after Toxie.

The cab is already cut and put together I just need to work with the art, mount the monitor and get the hardware goin'. It's going to be running an NES and the Toxic Crusaders game (or a repro cart because that game ain't cheap).

Here's a picture of the progress so far:

And here's what I'm shooting for:

Love Toxic Avenger!  I had totally forgotten about the Crusaders.   Ah... memories.

Wow that's bright. Pretty cool looking though. Seems to be the year of cabarets.

My OCD is hoping that the lines on the side match up with the ones on the front...

If you're going to cut a hole for the Marquee, you might want to bring it down a bit lower, or else your joystick is going to get in the way of the light.

I'm more than happy to contribute to the over saturation of cabarets. They are super fun and super simple. It's great to be able to make a full cab out of one sheet of mdf.

The lines will absolutely match up. when I paint them I'm just going to tape all the way around and paint in one fell swoop.

Yeah,  I'm glad I did that when I did the Q*Beret. Everything lined up perfectly. I cut a piece of cardboard to cover the top of the light and reduce light spill.

Watching this one! I love the theme, and the fact that you are plunging ahead even though you made a boo-boo.

So say somebody mounted their monitor upside down and they only used MDF and it would be a pain to unmount it and start over, is there an easy way to fix this without unmounting it?...asking for a friend........

Depends on the monitor, if CRT might be able to rotate your yoke 180, or rewire your yoke.  If you were going to use a PC and emulate it would be a no brainer, but your setup is kinda tricky.

starting to work on the bezel / control panel overlay today.

Blurry photo because it's super rough right now.

I also mounted the monitor but I'm not going to post it until I'm able to cover up my poor craftsmanship with art.  ;)

Making a little progress this morning. I've finished up the first draft of the art I'm going to be using.

Toxie art is from the Genesis version but whatcha gonna do. I'm gonna have one of my more artsy friends help me out with the slime as I'm not super happy with it.

Here's the Bezel.

the stripes and everything are pretty rough. I'm going to go back and vector all of that before I get it over to the printer.

as for the cab itself I put together the bottom base and then hopped on that bondo train to fill in all the holes. Only when you start to fill in those holes does it start to feel real.

Also, I just want to say god bless SPAX mdf screws. Those babies have made the progress up to this point a breeze. No predrilling and it doesn't split the MDF.

Thanks!

Test fit the coin door, installed locks, and started painting today. I did 2 coats of primer+sanding on the inside but didn't see the point in putting in that effort for the back. Also. Feel free to admire the travesty that is the screen mount here.  I'm excited to get the control panel done so I never have to look at that again.

Making tons of progress day. Leveler legs coming in tomorrow so I can finally attach the base. I need to order plexi for the bezel/control panel and I'll have everything I need to finish it up.

Looking good.  It is too late to go solid color on the front and save the stripes for the sides.  It's just a lot for the eyes to take in ya know.

It isn't too late. I haven't screwed in the front panel yet. But to be honest I'm going for the "a lot for the eyes to take in" look. I feel like it's totally Troma in that sense. I'm gonna make a few more mockups and see what happens.

I'm with ya, just seeing it IRL vs the mockup, the front panel stripes look odd to me with the marquee.  Not bad odd, just odd odd ya know?  If no one else pipes up just assume its me and continue on.  Looks like everything is well in hand.

No, I'm with you. I agree about the marquee. Could you make it a different color so that yellow doesn't blend in?

I changed the marquee background to green. Gonna get it reprinted this week.

This is an idea I'm toying around with. at this point I'm leaning towards either designing some fancy slime and having it printed or just use T-molding around the marquee section.

EDIT: Going with t-molding. looking at other photos made me realize that I like how clean it is in it's current state.

I was diggin the slime idea as well.  I realize it was just a mock up with paper or something, but printed graphic that matched the side art slime would be awesome. Gives it that extra pop vs a boring rectangle section.

So Cool!  it would awesome if you could make the slime 3 dimensional by sculpting low profile oozing slime with bubbles in it out of foam or something, then giving it a hard shell with epsilon, priming it, then painting it neon green.....or vinyl would be fine too.  Sorry, I used to work in the sign industry....kinda get carried away. Haha

LOOKS GREAT!

Aweosme! Love the glow....I may want to do that too in the future.  So cool you turned a "mistake" into a cool project.  Do you have any pics of the CPO and bezel with the screen on?     :applaud:

I'm still waiting on the plexiglass to cover the cpo/bezel. Should be coming this week. Once that gets here I'll be posting a ton of pictures of that part.

So the plexiglass showed up from the eBay seller. He didn't cut it to my specs, in fact he didn't cut it at all. I tried cutting it myself and straight wrecked it. I'm talking chips and full on breaks. Time to get some more. D:

Son of a beeeeotch.  If you have a router and flush trim bit, those cut plex flawlessly everytime.  Just sandwich your plex between two pieces of wood and make your cut.

Good luck dude!

I was saving about 5 dollars by going the ebay route. Learned my lesson there. I'm going to lowes tomorrow morning.

You need a fine blade to cut it with.  I use an 80 tooth blade in the table saw and it cuts like butter.  If your using a skill saw, you'll need a piece of scrap wood underneath

In it's current place with this hella rad Tom Whalen print hanging above it.

Controls and speakers installed.  Leaf switch buttons from Groovy game gear are dynamite.

Gonna redo the light box and take some more photos tomorrow. It will be finished tomorrow.

LOL! That's freakin awesome! Love the sculptural element....nobody does that.  Have you tried Neon green paint? Then maybe lightly hit the bottom edges with your darker spray green paint to add subtle Shadows.  So cool!

That's the paint I used. I thought "if anything it will be too bright." but the triple glaze clear coat really put some stank on it.

I noticed you didn't prime it.  that MDF is like a giant sponge....I bet it soaked up the color and changed it.  Since you've essentially already sealed it, I'd scuff the clear coat and throw down a coat of white.  Then use your neon green again.  that should make it pop.  Just make sure to wait to paint it after the window on that clear, otherwise it might lift and wrinkle on you.

Resurrecting a very old thread. I ended up decaseing the TV that was in there this past weekend. It has been sitting in my garage for years at this point so it was nice to do something to it. There's a few more things I want to do:
repaint the black part. I got scratched to ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- when I was removing the control panel and maybe redo the slime. I have a pretty large 3d printer that should make quick work of it.

Wow I love this thing!  Really great colors and theme.  The slime on the front is super cool too - really unique.

Why didn’t this come up in a “cabaret” search?  I would have referenced this for sure when doing my build but I never saw it!
