I built a 6 foot tall MAME cabinet about 8 years ago, now I’m looking to build something a little smaller and portable. Realized I only play the classics, so I got a 60 in 1 JAMMA kit, two player. Looked at some bartops but the size was too big for what I wanted. I like the size of griffindodd’s Little Ms. Pac-Man, I based this on his plans but changed things a bit to suit my needs. I wanted it to look like a wood crate or roadie case, with the aluminum rails and metal corners. The roadie case, part cost for the hardware was near $250. So I went with the extra plywood lying around the garage. I did buy some trim wood for about 10 bucks. Using a free NEC 2090UXI leftover from work for the monitor.
The theme is based on those multi-game boxes that come with 7 or 10 games, checkers, chess, Chinese checkers, you know the ones. Still deciding on the graphics, might just be some simple stenciling of the name and buttons or paint it grey and add wooden buttons to look like rivets on the trim, so it looks like a metal space ship control panel. I don’t know yet. I’m completely open to suggestions, it is a bit of an blank canvas. It’s ready for sanding and sanding and sanding, then primer and more sanding.
I’m highlighting some of the build so far. The first picture is the basic starting sketch. Basic. For the control panel and riser, I marked the placement and cut with jig saw and left a little bit which was later trimmed off with a flush trim router bit, needed to clean up the corner with a chisel, so the trim fit tight. The trim is .25” thick one trim board is 1” the other is 1.25” the 1.25” hangs over the edge to mate with a 1” piece so it all is 1.25”. Added .75” strip of plywood so I can have an incased bottom. Speaker was drilled on a drill press, many holes. All put together with glue and 16 ga nail gun the trim is glue and 23 pin nailer. Need to drill holes for player and coin buttons, and as I said before sand, fill, sand, sand , and sand.
Any thoughts, questions, suggestions, or ideas let me know.
