New Control Panel Artwork
« on: January 20, 2004, 02:37:14 pm »
Hey all. Here's a link to my completed artwork for my control panel overlay. As you can see, I chose to use cafepress for printing. An inexpensive alternative to some of the local printships. Please let me know what you think. Also, has anyone else ever used cafepress for this type of printing?
Thanks!

I'd be interested to hear how it looks when you get it

My only experience with cafepress was a buddy got some of the 5" ceramic tiles/coasters with photos on em. His source images were pretty poor, but the finished product was worse than it should have been- colors bled, it was fuzzier than the original

Is that price on there the break even cost to cover the product, or did you add a bit? I lost my account password so I havent checked out new products in a while

The base price for a large poster at cafepress is $17.99.  And yes, that is for the full print on poster paper. Then they only charge $2.50 for shipping and handling. Not too shabby. I did up the price a couple dollars just in case anyone else would like to purchase it...you know, for my time and all. As for the quality, I will let you all know how it turns out. I did create the image in PhotoShop with actual dimensions of 32in x 17in, with 200dpi. I hope that resolution is good enough for the large poster.
As far as cafepress goes, it's free to setup your own store, upload your own images, and then create products from those images (such as a poster for an overlay) and then buy it from yourself at cost.

That's actually a pretty good idea for getting your artwork printed. Let us know what it looks like when you get it.

OK, my artwork finally arrive from Cafepress! I am really pleased with the results. The print quality and paper quality are absolutely superb.

I even only sent my image with a dpi of 200, and they accept up to 300.

Here's a couple images on my control panel underneath the plexi...

That is really great! Is the center hole for a trackball? If so you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't use a lighted trackball. Fantastic looking panel.

The center hole is for a trackball. Like many of us, I can't afford an arcade trackball, so I'm going with a 2" MacAlly iBall. It is a translucent blue, so I do plan on putting an LED underneath it. Hope the mounting of the trackball turns out allright.

The glowwing orb in the center will really complete the panel. Be sure to post another pic when you get it mounted.

Thanks.
I will post my website under the project announcements when I get just a little further along. I have a website up already, but I feel like I've only just begun (and I have), that it would be a shame to publish the site only very partially finished.

I don't see a problem with publishing as you go. That's how I've been doing it.

Well there is one problem, finding time to update teh website while you're in the middle of a project!  ;D

Well, anyway, the whole point of this particular thread was mostly the usage of CafePress for printing. Now that I have an example of their quality, I can whole-heartedly recommend them.

If anyone needs help setting up a store with them, I could probably answer questions. (I have no affiliation with them at all, however).

My overlay was 32" x 17" at 200dpi, but the large poster product that I printed on can accept sizes up to 35" x 23" at 300dpi. So you can get some pretty large prints for the same price. Which is $17.99.

They also have a small poster product which prints up to 20" x 16" at 300dpi for $13.99

All their poster are printed on heavyweight 7 mil semi-gloss poster paper.

Sweet design, like the dueling dragons.
Just got back from Universals "Islands of Adventure" in Florida.
They have the dueling dragons roller coaster, very cool ride.
Did you get the idea from that?

I love the way they are blowing flames on the trackball.  Will be a blast to play, just don't get you're fingers burned...

Nice artwork, nice design.

Nope, I've never heard of the dueling dragons roller coaster.
I'm just a bit of a sci-fi/fantasy geek. So I knew I was going to do a fantasy theme from the start. I got my layout finalized in Visio first, and then I picked up that translucent MacAlly iBall. A backlit trackball in the middle of a fantasy-themed panel just gave me all sorts of ideas.

Are you sure?

Check out the following pics.  As soon as I looked at your CP it reminded me of the roller coaster.  I figured that was where your idea came from. It's just a weird coincidence or Deja Vu.

The Blue dragon is on the left and the Red one is on the right.  So the roller coaster copied your layout...

The weird thing is that they also refer them as Fire & Ice everywhere, except the Ice dragon is first and the Fire is second...

Oh well enough about roller coasters, back to the arcades...

Hey all. Here's a link to my completed artwork for my control panel overlay. As you can see, I chose to use cafepress for printing.

THREAD NECROMANCY!!!!

The thought occurred to me today that CafePress would be a neat/cheap way to print up some sideart that I could glue/clearcoat to my cabinet, so I decided to come here and see if anyone had any experience with them.

Sure enough, your post came up, sTyLeS.

So I noticed that you were originally talking about a control panel for your cabinet (which looks pretty sweet, by the way) and when I followed the link to your CafePress store, I found that you were selling a marquee.

How did the marquee turn out? Any light seepage? Or did you need to use TWO copies of the print to prevent it?

Regards,
Corporate Dog

I did print the marquee at CafePress as well. What occurred to me, however, after I printed the CP overlay and marquee separately, was that I probably could have fit both of them onto the same large poster for just the one price. Oh well, next time.
But to answer your question, the marquee is beautiful. The light is just an ordinary under-the-counter flourescent shop light from Menard's that came with a plastic diffuser. I did not have to use two copies at all, as the paper seems relatively thick and it looked fine with just the one. I have it sandwiched between two pieces of plexi.

Here's a pic of the cabinet with the marquee lit up, and the lights in the room off and no flash.

Verrrrryyyy interesting.

I too have purchased a coaster from CafePress and wasn't completely thrilled with how it came out, but the idea of getting an overlay and a marquee printed for ~$18 is very tempting.  Especially after hearing sTyLeS' recommendation.  Cool idear!
