[Need Your Advice] Wii Arcade
« on: September 20, 2016, 11:29:57 am »
Quick video:

I want to build a bartop-like cabinet for a Wii with the software above, but instead of having arcade controls, all games will be played using wii remotes

Features:
-Everything built in (console, monitor, cords)
-Controllers docked in charging station, accessible through a drawer/tray in the front
-Super simple controls (my 6 year old nephew figured out the software)
-Every NES game, SNES, Gameboy, Sega, 200 arcade (MAME) games, 200+ Wii games & more
-Fun for kids (Wii games) and their parents (retro games)  ;)
-(not in video) 2nd page for Media Center (DVD Player, Netflix, YouTube, Music Player, Photo Slideshow).

What do you guys think, is it feasible? Do you have any ideas for design of the cabinet, or additional features (such as the controller charger, etc).0

Sooooo...why not just plug the Wii into a TV and save yourself a bunch of time and hassle?

If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

For the same reason dedicated arcade machines are cooler than running emulators on a normal computer.

To clarify, I am totally open to wiring arcade controllers to the wii, but I don't see any way to do this. I tried using X-Arcade's DIY kit, but the input lag was awful. Any ideas?

So you want to put a television set in a box and stand in front of it and use wiimotes?

The box would add nothing to that experience. It wouldn't be cooler or more fun. It would be a tv set in a box, basically little different than just having a tv set in an entertainment center.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Maybe not an arcade machine per se, but how about something like a store demo unit?

There's a multi-console PCB called Cthulhu that would allow you to wire up a control panel and plug it into the gamecube ports of the Wii (one PCB per player/gamecube port)

If you're going to be wiimote-free though, you'd also need to invest some time setting up the Wii with homebrew that'd auto boot and skip past the main wii menu and into whatever game/emulator/frontend you have in mind.

@romshark, good idea!

@fydo, check out my video in the OP, I have it set to autoboot, and returns automatically to the loader when the wii remote power button is pressed

X-Arcade sells two items that combined will handle the control panel to console input.

http://shop.xgaming.com/collections/arcade-parts/products/x-arcade-build-your-own-arcade-control-panel-kit

and

http://shop.xgaming.com/collections/adapters/products/x-arcade-adapter-5-game-systems

This will give you a setup that will allow you to use multiple arcade consoles in your cabinet without rewire.  I would look at doing a Dreamcast over the Wii.  The Dreamcast, to me, is the best console since most of it's games were arcade ports and will translate well to a cabinet.

I dont see the point in this. A bartop arcade without arcade controls is stupid. Its like buying a front car clip and adding nice aftermarket front wheels to it, but the whole ass end of the car is missing.

Ive softmodded a wii, changed the case, changed the disc led, added a usb drive full of games. It was fun. I only enjoyed a few games. As far as emulators are concerned, it was neat. However, id rather use a rpi 3 which is more portable, has built in bluetooth for almost any new aged controller, and supports hdmi and component.

I agree, there just aren't enough controller based games for the Wii but there are some really good ones like PunchOut, NBA Jam, a couple of arcade remixes, and some fighters.  It could be a solid cabinet with a few A+ titles but the Dreamcast and original Xbox have a lot more.
