Midway Cruis'n World/Exotica pedal position? Just curious...
« on: September 15, 2016, 03:19:02 pm »
Hi everybody. So I was lucky enough to stumble upon the find of a lifetime for me. I was able to grab 2 Offroad challenge machines off craigslist for $100 for the pair! The cabs are identical to Cruis'n World I believe. I had been planning of building a 2 player Lan pc driving set up for years and when these machines came along is was like the stars aligning... Anyway they are in pretty rough shape so my plan is to do some repairs and basically turn them into a couple generic driving cabs for various games...

One thing that struck me as odd is that the pedals are quite offset. They are pretty far over to the right in stead of in the center. I sort of understand a slight offset as the coin door position is down by where your legs go, but they went way over. Wondering if anyone else has any of the machines and has noticed this and if they find it annoying or not. I may replace them with pedals from an outrun 2 machine as I already own a pair. Will have to modify the cab somewhat. Or I may just try to relocate the pedal more to the left.

You can see a picture of what I'm talking about here if your not familiar...

Isn't that pretty near where your right foot will rest? Personally I have not seen much in the way of perfect ergonomics or comfort in a sit-down arcade driver. Some of the deluxe Sega stuff is decent but all leave something to be desired.

Does it really bother you? It will take some modding to move them for sure. You could completely mod out the coin box if you plan to make them just emulator cabs.

Also, great deal on those games man.

never bothered me when I had a crusin usa. You can always just remove the coin box by taking out the 8 bolts holding it in and have the games on free play.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Some how it only occurred to me after I posted this that the cabs might be designed for you to use one foot and switch between gas and break. That makes a lot more sense. I guess I'm a little concerned because I feel like there are some games that sort of require you to brake while holding the gas at the same time in order to drift properly...

Thanks I never thought of that either. I really don't need the coin box so I may just do that...

The games are designed to use 1 foot that switches between gas and brake, just like real driving.

Google "heel and toe"

Yeah I figured as much, but I'll be playing pc games with this as well, and I could swear some were designed to use both at the same time. I'll have to do some research.

Thanks

That's what heel toe is as Malenko is referring to. Race drivers use heel to to downshift. All with the right foot so left is free for the clutch.

I gotcha, I don't think I'm that skilled with my arcade games though :)

I think I'm gonna remove the coin door then figure if I just wanna move the original pedals over or use the Outrun 2 pedals.

On Model 2 games like indianapolis 500 at the brickyard, using two feet w/ no clutch gives maximum control to the driver. I find that a light tap to the brake halt a push, but a slight lift on the accelerator helps you turn. A hard jab at the brake while floor-boarded can put you into a nice power skid drift through a corner.

Yeah I like to keep my foot on the gas while braking while playing Outrun 2 as well, I decided I'm going to move them to the middle one way or another...

Thanks
