Ipac Ultimate LED power
« on: September 06, 2016, 03:45:18 am »
Hi All,

I have an IPAC ultimate, and have just bought 18 ultralux buttons with LEDs. The PC I have has no MOLEX style power connectors, and I see the LEDs are 5V. I plan to run the power for the LEDs through the IPAC using a USB to DC cable I have made. Will this cause any issues with the board? Will the USB 500mA be enough (apologies, my electronics knowledge is almost non existent!)

I used to have 12v LEDs connected using the provided molex to DC cable, but that PC is no longer used.

Many thanks

Either but a Molex splitter or just cut into one of the lines and joint it.

Problem solved :)

Thanks very much for the reply. The issue I have is that the PC im using is SFF. it has 2 x sata power connections (both used to power HDDs). I have no other power connections on the PSU, hence I hope the 5V usb will be ok. From your reply, I assume it will be?

In that case get a sata splitter and a sata to molex adapter.

I would think you could power them from a USB though yes, I think USB can carry something like 2-3A which should be plenty for your LED's but I have never tried it. Ive always come straight off the PC's PSU.

Ahh ok.

Well Ill ask one last question. I have found a 12v 0.5a DC adapter with a positive polarity. Can I use that into the IPAC ultimate to power 5v leds?

No would need to be 5V otherwise they would be over bright or blow!

Just remembered you are going through a Pac so yes you should be able to use 12v if needed just double check the paperwork.

But i still think its easier breaking into your computers PSU :p

No prob but these are your best solution:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351174713105

You can split off your existing sata with the sata splitter one to hdd and one to the 2x molex adapter which gives you 1 extra for expansion in future.
