Custom (Not A Typo) Coin Up Arcade
« on: September 05, 2016, 10:14:25 am »
I feel the need to play some arcade games again. So might as well log its build here.

I moved house since my last project and now i have a bigger space and a garden, no more balcony or horrible small storage basement build  :)

I picked up some basic stuff to get things started

The design will be a mix from my first and second arcade cabinet.

I hope to get the woodworking done in a month or 2 max, before the weather gets bad.

Nice looking lines there.

Yes, that panel was kind of a pain to do. As i only have a router and a electric handsaw to build this. Making straight lines takes up a lot of time this way.
I am happy that it turned out ok.

Omg its massive lol...

Actually no, its even less in dept(94cm) then my first arcade street fighter cabinet(178cm high, 60cm width, 100cm depth. same width, but its a little higher because i wanted a bigger marquee for the logo.

But yeah crt builds take more space

Slapping on characters or logos on the sides is not everyone's cup of tea. So ill try this grid approach. I think i will use this style for the background and/or sides.

That's a pretty cool idea, is it going to be full wallpaper or are the marquees going to be part of some photo mosaic swoosh or something?

That speaker panel is REALLY nice. I've got  a very similar panel to do for my build. I've got a pretty good idea how I'm going to do it so would be interesting to compare notes once mines done

Wow, that seriously looks sweet. I was too preoccupied with my own build to notice this one - shame om me :-\
How do you plan on flush trimming the laminate on all the miter cuts on i.e. the coin door (and what I assume will be the volume panel just bellow the cp. ?

I'm debating with my self at the moment on how to go about this and whether or not I should make the miter cuts after I've laminated.

Yes, i added 6mm space for plexi and glued it on tight. its the bottom piece. the top will have screws like my other cabs.

i always laminate after i made the cuts. that way less chance to damage the laminate

Very pretty...

I'd remove the white text in the blue circle since I can't make out what it's trying to say.

It makes the most sense, how ever I still cannot get my head around how you i.e. trim the laminate on an edge that is cut in 20 degree angle?
Another thing, I see you didn't router out slots for the battons this time, what glue did you use?

Lovely proportions. I'm somewhat warming up to the idea of using laminate instead of melamine (which is super hardy, but tends to crack and shatter over the edges)

Here is the marquee. What do you guys think?

I think it's great, but I'd tone the background intensity/modify its colours a little bit so the logo itself pops more.

I agree with Lew about removing the white text.  Otherwise it is outstanding.  You've cracked the nut of displaying multiple characters within artwork by managing to look modern and old school at the same time.  It would not surprise me if some commercial vendor steals your design for a multi-cabinet.

Here is the marquee. What do you guys think?

Great job! Love that you aren't putting an LCD in. CRT is tougher but well worth it. Very nice clean lines on the build. Keep it up! :applaud:

here i explanded how. works really well. i also did this on the top, but getting close to the edge on the top can be tricky. also dust in your eyes at that height.

Ah how clever! -that top cut requires a lot of nerve though and a steady hand :)
I will do a few test cuts tomorrow on some spare laminate. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that my plunge saw will be abe to handle the miter cuts with out tearing the laminate   ::)
Did you use regular wood glue for your battons?

Did you use regular wood glue for your battons?

the laminate is glued with very strong contact adhesive. hella expensive bottle (40 euro, 50 usd)
and the battons are glued and screwd from outside in and inside out. glue is a type of no nails needed, can carry a elephant,  filling type

i got some more pieces done, they took a lot of time, happy that they are out of the way!

i managed to make a mistake. i used up the laminate needed for the outside and left other bigger pieces not used. ordering new will set me back for 150 euro.
or i will use what i have and it will have a seam at the bottom (cab is 186 cm, laminate is 130cm+60cm pieces)
If i router off the sides it will be perfectly flush. and once the artwork is on there. who will notice.. i dont even think you will feel a seam.
if needed i could fill the seam.

Need some feedback on the Control Panel art. All these logos makes it a busy cab. But thats ok. The big black panels levels it out.

I prefer the one without the logo in the middle -It's more balanced and relaxing to the eye
Both are good though, I guess it's a matter of personal preference

That glow is way too much. Especially from the red side, you're starting to get purple brown bleeds in there and I'm pretty certain that will not print cleanly.  I would reduce the spread of the glow and perhaps the falloff a bit too.

Yep i think the purple is because of the transparency of the red against the blue background. Ill see what i can do about it.

Ok some random updates and other strange pictures on things.

Making the frame for the screen.

Speaker panel to black out all the incoming light from behind.

Pc parts. I5 3.4ghz. 4GB, 480GB SSD, Radeon 6450, 500GB HDD

Cut up the pc case to use as base for the cab.

circle cutting jig for control panel corners  >:D

Wired up the on off switch, 12v and on off to mainboard.

USB, Volume and bass controll mounted

Marquee backlight with aliexpress ledstrip, new kind, very bright, 90 leds/m smd 5630 strip. I removed the cheap 3m tape and used pro stuff to mount it.
Covered the back with aluminum.

Backside all done. just waiting for the power socket to come in.

Huge 30cm fan with zalman fanmate for fine tuning airflow

z2300 subwoofer, lan port, start button installed.

Speaker grill

Top of cabinet with removable marquee plexy holder. Sorry for the grainy pics, its raining and there isnt much light.

Top, angled piece flush with top piece.

all its glory  :applaud:

Thanks! I fixed the over-saturation on the artwork and finalized its design and send it off the gameongraphix :)

I ordered in the plexi (clear uv absorbent) for the marquee and a sheet for the screen. its 49.0% light Transmission, uv absorbent, same i used on the other cabs.

Time to start wiring and installing windows.

Things have changed a lot software wise, i am excited to see what groovymame and crt emu drivers will conjure.

I had a tread going a while back asking what os to use. i will go with windows 7 64bit.

But i got the speaker panel done.

I simply *love* the way you embed those ventilation/speakers grills. How exactly do you do it? It looks so nice, almost flush with the laminate.

Also, what size of TV are you using? That cabinet sure has some lovely proportions.

Tv is a sony trinitron 25 inch flatscreen.

Making it flush :
- cut out the hole where you want the grill in the mdf, make it as perfect as possible. using a router
- then laminate the hole panel
- then cut out the laminate inside the hole. with a flush cut bit
- then route out the mdf around the edge of the laminate
- then you can place the grill against the laminate

Got the pc working with crt emu driver, it took me quite a few hours to get it going.

and i got the plexi installed. the ledstrip behind the marquee is WAY to bright  :laugh2: :laugh2: I have to remove at least 2 strips.

I couldn't see the pics before but now I can so looks like it's fixed.

Nothing quite like seeing it running under CRT emudriver. Knocks the pants of HLSL for sure.

Looks really good behind that plexi too. Which shade did you go for?

I've got a 25" B&O in my cab which has a slight curve to it which I kinda like, but would have really liked a flat (CRT) screen if I could have gotten hold of one...

Thanks! I am still waiting on my artwork and drilling template to continue on the cabinet.

Meanwhile i am doing small things like changing the coin accepter to take euro instead of quarters. I had to fiddle with all the screws to accept it. and file open the coin slot a little more to accept the thickness of the coin.

Software wise i got the roms and themes running in hyperspin. Removing all the clones, anything before and after 1978 and 1999, gun/mahjong/strange controls/quiz/casino.

Still need to tweak the monitor, its hard to find a good setting. Some games are stretched way to much and some have borders. crt display drivers and it settings takes a while to understand.

Cleaned up some of the internal wiring.

Looking perfect as always :applaud:

For crt I always take the Neo Geo test crosshatch screen and adjust that till it's perfect. When that's done you only need to decrease the vertical size a bit and you're good to go on most vertical games too.

As always, quality stuff, martijn!

For the speaker grill, are you simply gluing the whole speaker housing and its grill directly to the laminate? Also are you using vertical grade laminate or countertop grade? If countertop grade, then are you using larger size t-molding?

For the speaker i bought some grills. same i bought for the street fighter arcade. You can find pictures from it and how i mounted them there.
But that grill is flush with the laminate. The logitech speakers are above the grill. and i added a panel so there is no light coming through the sides of the speaker.
Speakers are painted. and without the original grill. they have some THX logo on them i didnt like.

The laminate is 0.9mm thick i use 20mm tmolding. the mdf is 18mm.

I am a true fan of Martijn's speaker panel mounting technique found here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,134336.120.html.  I've used it in all of my builds since he posted the pics.

Looks very classy and clean if you execute the steps.

Busy week. But i got things done.

Started to work on the control panel.

And installed the artwork and some buttons for the "look"

Monday i am going to pick up the exact model tv i have in the cab now, I really messed up the geometry and just cant seem to get it right.
It was only slightly off in to begin with. Going to give it a try

Cost wise its no problem. The woman is asking 5 euro for it. But labor...
