material under motherboard
« on: January 18, 2004, 11:05:10 pm »
I am working on getting my motherboard to fit inside my cab but with the mounting slab that came with the cab it wont fit the vga and sound card, if i lay it on the bottom it would fit fine. I know that being on the aluminum floor would fry the board but is their a thin insulation i could just put under the motherboard? Somthing it can lay on without hurting it. Thanks

I don't think I'd just lay it there, even with something under it.
It might start to build up heat.
If you are going to mount the bare board in there, I would recommend using standoffs like you would use to mount it into a case.
They are basically just hollow pieces of metal that go on the back side of the mobo, around the bolts that are holding it down to the case.
Ideally, you would still want some ventilation for it though.

Can you get your entire case in on it's side?
That would let you just pull it all back out, stand it back up, and use the drives, etc... when you needed to add/modify something.
Most cases don't have anything on the right side as you look at the front.
If you set it on that side, everything but the removable drives should still work fine.
I would recommend putting a blow hole in the other side, and mounting a fan there to get the hot air out of the case more efficiently.

Cannot fit whole computer in. I have a japanease sitdown cab and the storage area is very small. Ill use the standoffs. ill also add a fan or two, should not be too hard.

To bad you couldn't get ahold of a junk case someone doesn't need anymore that has a removeable motherboard tray, then you could just bolt that tray down to make it secure and there ya have it :)

Good lucky!

I just used the protective material that came with my motherboard (see here). For my video card I just bent the corner 90 degrees, and then hooked it under the motherboard (see here).

If that material is the foam that comes with your motherboard box, i would be darn certain that it doesn't conduct electricity and i would be leary anyways because of the heat that could build up and melt the foam.   This is all assuming that it is the foam lol.  I still thinking finding a removeable motherboard tray would be the PERFECT solution for this type of setup.

You would still need to have stand offs of some sort.
