2nd player buttons on the side
« on: August 02, 2016, 10:51:35 am »
I have access to free 10" tablets. I was thinking about making a mini bartop. The minimum width of the control panel is 27.7cm (10.9"). It is way too small for two player joysticks and buttons. But if I place the player 2 buttons to the side it may be doable. Player 2 hand can rest on the table and use the buttons on the side. Have anyone tried this?

I only need 2 or 4 buttons per player (+ some controll buttons but they don't require extra width).

How well does the OMAP4 4430 platform run mame4droid?

That is one option I have considered.
Have anyone tried mame4droid on Kindle Fire 1st gen? It got the same chipset as the free tablets.

Stop thinking about 2 player games. You could make it single player and make it good, or you could try to force 2 players onto a tiny screen and make it terrible.

Agree with the above.
Tablets are made for personal use.
I know you are making a cab with it but Its still only a personal sized screen!

I see you said "tablets." You could always make two mini-cabinets and interface them somehow to that each player has his own screen.

Otherwise, perhaps some separate plugs where you can use external controls for two player games.

What you are building is far closer to a gameboy than it is to an arcade game. No one was ever chomping at the bit to get a second gamepad to plug into their gameboy.

Once you build it with 2 player controls you have then sabotaged it by insisting on using a free tablet. That 800 mhz ARM processor is going to choke on anything past the classic era.

Classics like Bubble Bobble and Metal Slug are fine :)
I'll try what works on the tablet before building anything.
I'll go with 1 player controls only and add a port for external control if necessary. Some games, like the ones mentioned above, are best played with a friend :)
