School me on touchscreens
« on: July 30, 2016, 09:43:35 am »
Hello, are touchscreens independent from the monitor?  Are the connections universal?  I am trying to replace one and I am not sure how they work and connect.

Thanks for your help,
SP

They're typically USB or serial and are an overlay.

Thanks!  Are they interchangeable or is there some kind of adapter to do it?

There is a physical controller the panel attaches to. Some are small like this one.

Others like in my megatouch units are larger.

Either way, they're basically the same concept, but are not universally interchangeable.

Each panel brand typically uses its own setup, but a few share the same controllers.  If you can confirm the make and model of the touch panel, a quick google search should show you what you're looking for.

You can find full ELO touchscreens on ebay for as little as a buck.

You can also find touchscreens used for POS systems on the cheap as well.

I replaced the touchscreen on my Megatouch XL with an ELO serial touchscreen.
It was plug and play.

I've also used a generic small (12"?) LCD serial touchscreen.

Back when I was building jukeboxes for my friends, the ELO USB touchscreens seemed to be going for around $80-90.

I've never used the overlays I see on ebay cheap, but I don't see why they wouldn't work.

With every one I've dealt with, the monitor and touchscreen use two different connections and show up as two different devices.
It varies by application whether or not they can be independently replaced though.
I imagine newer stuff is more integrated.

What are you trying to replace the touchscreen on?
