  • I want to build my own arcade controls!

I really like the idea of a 4 coin ‎slot for a Mame type system, how do people manage free play?

- Is there a global setting in Mame when I want to turn  on free play for all games? If not, and the only way is to include a coin button, is there a global setting to disable/enable the coin button depending on if I want to enable free play?‎

- I had read up on how the player buttons dont't work well in 4 player games because in certain ones player 1 will be the the left most player instead of the character in front of you. I read for this reason that people use start buttons instead, I'm torn because I like player buttons but the mismatch of player selection would bother me, just wondering what most people do.

- Where is the best place to get the 4 count slots?‎

- Do the BYOAC tokens still exist, I followed. A previous link and it was dead,  can I still get custom tokens made?

- Can I restrict the coin slots to just tokens and nothing else? If so, how?

Thanks‎

Decide what is you want first. Do you want freeplay? Do you want a way to coin up with the buttons? Or do you want to use tokens?

Personally, I have a shitload of various sized tokens. I have my coin mechs modified to accept any sized coins. Normally, when children are playing, I'll give them access to the tokens so they learn the "old ways". But when I'm playing I have a shift key combo that allows me to coin up by pressing and holding the shift button (mine is the start button) and pressing another button (button 1 in this case).

There is no global free play setting in MAME. You need to do it game by game - but if you are using tokens, you don't need to set freeplay.

And finally, I don't set anything to freeplay. I use tokens and Arcadenut's AnyCoinMechs.

  • Worthless button pusher!
Some games don't have good freeplay options, but all games handle coin-ups. If you look at machines in a freeplay environment (e.g. bar), you will see credit buttons on some machines for this exact reason. I don't do freeplay on my machines (NeoGeo excepted), although I will add hidden credit buttons (I like gluing a switch behind the coin rejects or hiding a black button somewhere like above the marquee).

They came along after I built up my massive stash of coin mechs, but I can't think of a single valid reason not to buy AnyCoinMechs.

If you want to add a switch for coins in a non destructive manner, a Phoenix local sells these:

Put one on Janky Kong and my Super Pac-Man cocktail for ZapCon and just left them on since they work so well. Every BYOACer who attended ZapCon got one in their SwagBag as well.

You can assign controls in mame globally and per game. So you can make player1 be wherever you want.

You can assign controls in mame globally and per game. So you can make player1 be wherever you want.

I'm referring to what I read in the 4 player build consideration thread.

"For some 4-player games, if you change the in-game control settings so MAME has players in a 1, 2, 3, 4 configuration it will match up with the screen -- farthest left on the control panel = farthest left on the screen.  When you choose a playing position on 4 player games like TMNT and The Simpsons, you are mainly choosing a character.
It's not so much that you're player 1 or 2, but you are Marge or Homer.

* One downside to remapping is possibly causing confusion if you have labels/start buttons with the player# imprint instead of a generic "start" label/vinyl button sticker.

Oh, and

http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=171_381&products_id=2576

Oh Thank you!  I find the price really reasonable considering the realism it adds.

There are some things I don't remember from my gaming days, did Arcades leave the .25 label or did they specify a label for tokens? Now that I think about it, they may have left the original sticker and then placed a sticker near the coint slot to say how many tokens.

I don't remember the label being yellow, I remember it being red.

Ha, I cant think of one, my kids are smart and will figure out non tokens work and there goes my control. I want them to have a certain amount and have to be as selective as I was growing up, cherishing every last token I had left and planning out all the games I would play with them.

Ok forget free play, I understand now that free play is a mode that has to be turned on per game.

So I want to coin-up with tokens, but I'm considering leaving the coin up buttons to emulate free play. Meaning if I want to give people free reign, they can keep pressing the coin up button if I have it enabled. I'm guessing the coin up buttons could be enabled/disabled in one spot within mame or the front end loader, not sure how that part works.

Does anybody else use that method of enabling / disabling the coin up button for large gatherings? and then turn it off to enforce tokens during regular play?

Place a hidden switch somewhere that opens and closed the coin up circuit. That way you don't have to go fiddling around in software right before a large gathering. Just flip the switch, and boom, credit button works. Gather is over... flip the switch and back to token play.

Here's an example of what Neph mentioned.

When the red rectangle switch is closed, inputs 2 and 3 work.

When the switch is open as shown, inputs 2 and 3 won't work.

Excellent. Thank you, exactly what I was looking for :)

Is it difficult to adjust the coin mech to accept a standard token size of .984 and coin return anything else?  or is an additional hardware add-on necessary. Are there instructions I can follow?
