Need a repair / replacement quote
« on: June 13, 2016, 08:35:52 am »
I have a custom, 2-player bartop arcade cabinet that I received damaged by my shipper. The main board was snapped of inside the cab after being dropped and the unit will no longer power up.

The item was insured, and the claim approved....but they are asking for a repair/replacement quote. The unit is valued at $1500.00. Shipping cost is approx. $200.00 one way if I need to send it somewhere for service. So I'm in the market for a repair, or possibly even a new unit once this is all completed.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Depends on  what needs repair. What do you mean "the main board?"

It was dropped on the upper left side of the top of the cab. The jarring from the drop cracked the molding, dented the edge molding, snapped the motherboard mounts, etc. The motherboard bouncing around damaged the board and a number of connections. The hard drive won't boot (tried on another PC) the monitor won't fire up, and the wood cab glue seams feel sloppy now. The cab will sway left and right now if you try to move it, like the joint seals are all loose.

Since it's insured and you had just purchased just send them the original invoice and get a replacement (unless the prices have increased since then in which case send them a new quote for a new machine at current prices ) -- They may or may not want the broken system back but from the sound of it there is more dmage and time involved in repair than it would be worth (as with most electronic devices it's cheaper to just replace than try to repair !! ) -- ANd you will not know what all is broken until it is repaired thus getting an accurate repair estimate may leave you with less than needed when something else is found to need replacement -- figure they broke it - they bought it and need to just purchase a replacement for you. - as that will ensure you get a workng one at the price they insured instead of cutting a check for less than needed to repair leaving you out cold ! (figure as it is being repaired you may find out the monitor needs replacing adding another $200+/- to the repair cost etc. etc. and they will not want to cut multiple checks if the repair estimate increases after payment -- so just get a new one and do not accept any part of the one they damaged that could also break !)

They have the original invoice cost, now they also want to determine a cost to repair. It's a formality to complete the claim.

I realize that a repair at this point is ridiculous, shipping it to someone to look at it and back alone makes it a moot point. What they want is a formal quote stating that the cost to repair it exceeds my insured amount.

At the end of the day I just want this done so that I can purchase a new bartop cab. There are parts of this thing that I can't diagnose like the controls....and if the mishandling of the cab broke the parts that I CAN test, I can only assume that the rest of the parts could also be damaged.

Tell them it was insured and you want a replacement not a repair as you can not be sure if there is unseen damage so you want a replacement rather than having to deal with investing your time and effort to get it repaired when other damage may be found later and repair work will probably result in damage still being noticeable rather than it being new as purchased. IF they want to have it repaired at their cost and then resell it they can have the broken one back (provided they pick it up and/or pay to have it sent to them. -- You purchased new and it was insured so you want it delivered in new condition without having to find a repair service and wait for repairs - so either refund the entire payment or send you a replacement as that is what you paid for and why it was insured in the first place !!

I have told them this, but they want a 3rd party to tell them of the costs involved.

Have PBJ whip you up an invoice.  Repair on something like that will cost at least as much as replacement.

Then tell them to come pick it up and find a repair place themselves -- you purchased a product and had it sent insured so that you would not have to deal with any shipping problems - the product was damaged (which they have already agreed) and you need them to pay the insurance claim and get your product replaced or have your payment refunded in full. What is done with the system is not your concern (that is between the company you purchased from and the insurance company ) all you want is the product you ordered replaced or your refund.

Yeah, good luck with that line of reasoning JDFan.  And this is coming from the Chargeback Commando.

Anyway, sent an invoice with legit company information.  Good luck.
