My experience is, if it works for you, do not touch anything. Unless you are dead set on having the most correct emulation, or you must have that new game, your best bet to arcade bliss is to use the set you have now. Newer version of Mame are notoriously known for sometimes drastic loss of emulation speed in favor of emulation correctness. Mind you, this is the goal of the Mame project.
So if your set works for you, stick with it. Most FE can support multiple versions for any particular game you might want to play anyway...
