Simple wiring control panel question.
« on: April 23, 2016, 06:43:34 pm »
I want to change out the buttons and joystick I have on my reproduction pac-man with led buttons/joystick. Do I just simply replace the buttons and joysticks and put all the wires back where they were originally and the led will fire up. Or will there be an extra wire that needs to go to the power supply for each button/joystick to fire up the led?

I was looking to put it in the right place. Where does it belong?

Thanks,  Scott!
Glad to assist.

Keith -- Yes, the old microswitch wires should all transfer exactly as-is to the new stick/buttons as long as the new controls have the same size Quick Disconnects. (QDs)

***The following assumes that you are wiring the LEDs for simple single-color, always-on operation, not software-controlled/multi-color RGB/animated using an LED controller board.***

For the LEDs, you'll need to add two daisy-chain wires.

-  One will be ground for the LEDs.

-  The other will be power for the LEDs.

The pre-fab daisy chains in the pic are from Paradise Arcade.

LED pushbutton power tabs use 0.250" QDs.

Not sure how your specific joystick LED connections work, but post a pic or a link to the vendor and we'll help you figure it out.   ;D

So one one ground and one power for the button and one ground and one power for the led. Four "connections" per one button?

Close but for the buttons - one to ground and one to the connection on the game \encoder -- Since only 1 button goes to each input on the game PCB - ie. player 1 start button goes to ground and the player 1 start connection on the PCB\Jamma connector (just reuse the existing wiring for the buttons and add a new ground and power connection for the LEDs)

Yes, for a single-color LED button like this you'll have 4 wires.
- Encoder input (microswitch NO tab) -- single wire to encoder
- Encoder ground (microswitch COM tab) -- usually daisy-chained
- LED power (one "stirrup" tab) -- usually daisy-chained
- LED ground (other "stirrup" tab) -- usually daisy-chained

I usually put the LED ground wire on the side with the large black tab. (bottom of the LED socket in this pic)

You may need to turn the LED 180 degrees so the polarity is correct.

PROTIP:  Check LED polarity before you install/wire the socket using the diode setting on your multimeter.  LED will light dimly when the red lead is on the positive and black lead is on the negative.

Scott
P.S. How many LEDs are you using and where are you getting the power for them?  Computer PSU Molex?
