Fluorescent Light Wiring Question
« on: April 11, 2016, 06:50:47 pm »
One of the cabinets I'm working on has a fluorescent fixture that I'd like to re-use.  The manual says that it is a 115 VAC fixture.  Can I plug this into a 110 socket or do I need to get a new ballast?  I assume it will work but will be slightly dimmer.

115, 110, 120...

All the same.  It's AC, so the number you are using depends on exactly which formula is being used.

The only time it really comes up is if you move countries.  The US and I think Canada both use 110 so anything listed near that works.  Europe uses 220.  So country really becomes the deciding factor when dealing with AC.  Well, unless you are talking high voltage AC in the states - that's 220.  :)

Japan is confusing too. 100V and half the country is on 50hz and the half is on 60hz.

Holy crap.  That's gotta play havoc on timing circuits.

That's exactly why I asked my dumb question.  I wondered if I had a Nintendo situation going on.
