Best ArcadeSD joystick/controls?
« on: March 22, 2016, 02:50:54 pm »
I am considering upgrading my Galaga themed cabinet with a regular Galaga configuration to the Galaga themed multicade with three action buttons and trackball.
I've currently got a red top wico 4/8 way and I like the authenticity of the look but I do get the occasional "sticky" joystick on the 4 way games.
So if I do the upgrade - it's to be able to play all the games on the ArcadeSD as best as possible
Looking for recommendations on joystick, buttons and trackball considerations to create the optimal ArcadeSD experience!

Thanks!

Are the 3 action buttons so you can play the vertical missile command? I think everything else on that board uses two buttons. (Except Defender and Stargate, which use 5)

On this same note...I was wondering how many arcade sd games actually use 8-way controls? If you go to the phoenix arcade website...their "Horizontal and vertical supported games list" link is broken.

Anybody have an arcade sd supported games list?
If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

Yes Missle Command and Gunsmoke both use 3 buttons. Also for things like Mario brothers with jump and fire, Elevator Action, Excitebike - I wouldn't have to reach over to the player 1 button to hit the second button.

Galaga CPO and Panel with trackball for ArcadeSD

Looking for something like this for my Galaga themed arcade cabinet. Would be swapping out regular Galaga CP.
this picture is from Phoenix arcade - I'm assuming I just need to add two buttons and the trackball but was wondering if anyone knew of anything pre assembled?

Probably not a concern for you, but the ArcadeSD plays games that use a 49-way stick (i.e. Sinistar). So, if you wanted to play those with the proper stick, then you'd need a 49-way. Probably not worth it considering the few number of games, but just throwing it out there in case.

Wico 4/8 way?

Looking at the game list, my personal choice would be for two sticks: a Wico 4-way and a Wico 8-way. I have a pair of 60-in-1s -- one for 4-way and one for 8-way/trackball -- and that is what I used.

Failing a two-stick solution, either a switchable stick or an 8-way Wico (which is what I suspect you already have).

I'm going with 4-way only on my ArcadeSD.  Do you think an original Pac Man joystick would work well?

Actually, and IMO, the original Pac stick is probably the best of the 4-ways. If When I move my 4-way 60-in-1 out of the generic cab and into a Pac, I'm going to switch the Wico out for an original Pac stick.

Some people say that the replacement Pac stick from Happ is also a good 4-way, but I cannot abide clickiness.

That's my favorite stick to play Pac Man (or MS) with but I've never used one with other 4-way games.  We are on the same page with the clickiness.

It works really well with other 4-way games like Pengo, Dig-Dug, Frogger, etc.. but not so great with Donkey Kong.

The original pacman 4-way stick is great on the ASD. That's what was on my last build and going on my current build.  All of the 2-way and 4-way games play well with this stick.

Isn't there a 49 way stick that the ArcadeSD can switch to the right setting according to the game?  Is it a red ball top and does anyone have a link to it?

ArcadeSD does provide an interface that would allow you to use the 4/8 way servostick from ultimarc.

I have new, and completely rebuilt 49-ways with several custom parts, which come with a Hand-Candy balltop of your choice.  They are expensive, at $79.95, but I have sold quite a few of them to ArcadeSD users.

Awesome. I'm sure the joysticks are great but I'm about a decimal away on the price I want to pay.
Is it just me or does the ArcadeSD actually do a pretty good job on its own of managing 4 and 8 way games with an 8 way stick?  Seems much better than the 60 in 1.

60-in-1 is ancient MAME before (I think) you could do control overrides (e.g. make Down+Left = Left) and it seems that Clay put a lot of thought into it for ArcadeSD (check myriad threads over on KLOV), so is not too surprising.
