Committed heresy, but seeking help...
« on: March 21, 2016, 03:13:43 pm »
I bought a Pandora's Box 3 last week.  I know, bad ju-ju.  Whatever.

My questions have to do with hooking it all up.  It has VGA out, so that's easy enough.  It also has audio ports so I can just plug it straight into some PC speakers.  I'm a bit confused on the JAMMA hookup.  If I buy a pre-wired JAMMA harness, will there even be wires on 25-28, c-f?  If no wires are there, can wires be connected?  I mean, are the connection fingers even going to be in the socket?

I've not dealt with JAMMA before, so am shooting in the dark here.

Just buy a fully-stuffed harness and you'll be fine.

I don't think I have ever bought a harness that wasn't fully stuffed -- only seen them in existing cabs.

If you're only ever going to have a cheap 60-in-1 then the cheap harnesses work.  Cheffo's right though if you get a fully populated harness you'll be fine.  Otherwise you may need to run extra wires or reroute existing ones.

I did a Pandoras Box 3 a while back. Let me save you a ton of time, there is a service button on the side of the unit. I couldn't figure out what the problem was with mine, but I had to enter the service menu.

Get the fully populated harness.

I've been tempted to buy their King of Air board but I can't handle input lag. I'll do mame and a PC if I go that route.

Oh, and another tip - be sure you can control the volume. There seems to be a good amount of difference between games.

I'd read about that.  I plan on running the Box through a set of PC speakers with the volume control broken out.  Once it get's here I'm actually gonna build an upright with this thing as the brains.

A kind & wise operator taught me early on that if you are going to wire a JAMMA cabinet, use a complete harness. It isn't worth the dollar savings down the road if you (or a future owner) want to repurpose it for MVS or one of the other JAMMA-like pinouts.

Got the board and the harness.  Wired it all up with only a single hiccup.  The coin1 and coin2 on the harness were wired into a 4 pin micro-connector instead of QDs.  Cut the connector off and crimped on a couple of QDs and all is well.

Quite happy with the board for the price.  My main quibble is that the games are not in any logical order.  Not alphabetical, not grouped, just sorta... jumbled.  Sound is wonky on some like I've heard.  Galaga, for instance, has NO sound.  I have noticed a bit of control lag in places, but nothing game breaking.  I really like that the credit count is carried from game to game.  Don't quite know why, but I like it.  Now I just need to build a cabinet for it.

I just finish a Pandora's Box 2 for a friend. The kit was supposed to come with a Pandora's Box 3 and the vender has said they have shipped a replacement. Does the Pandora's Box 3 have a options to remap the buttons in the semis menu?

I haven't checked that yet.  I only glanced at the setup menu when I was looking to change the "exit game" option.  I'll look closer when I get home from work today and let you know.
