Wiring a P360 to an IPAC
« on: January 14, 2004, 09:53:32 pm »

The tabs on my P360 are:

Up / down / left / right
Ground
+5V

Up / down / left / right, is pretty straight forward, and I'm assuming "ground" on the P360 connects to one of the IPAC ground screws.

But....what terminal does the +5V connect to?

I powered my P360's right from the header on the I-PAC.  There is a pic in this thread:

There is a schematic here so you can identify the +5V pin on the I-PAC header: http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac2.html.

this can be confusing,
I've seen (and asked) this question before, but never gotten a clear response.

U/D/L/R connect as normal (like you said)
Previous responses say the 5v +/- connect up to your power source which can be:
the ipac (see the schematics).
Molex connector from the computer
or, (what I want to do, but haven't heard if this way will work or not)
a 5v transformer.

I keep getting confused as to if a ground is needed to connect up to the ipac again?
or how this is expected to work...  Anyone actually do this?  the reason I want to avoid the ipac's 5v is that I want to put 4 perfect360s on a control panel, and I'm worried about the draw through the ipac itself.  I'd feel much better pulling this from either a transformer or a molex connector. exactly how it's wired back to the ipac (just the directions? a ground? if so, from where?)

The I-PAC is grounded through the cable connecting it to the PC, and an additional GND wire is not required.  I also connected the GND from the P360's to the I-PAC ground terminals.

Thanks Oscar.

I plan on using the LED harness, so I guess I'm out of luck when it comes to tapping +5V from my IPAC.

I also have an Optipac. It has +5V and ground terminals for a player 2 trackball and spinner, which I'll never use.

That should work right?

Getting the +5V from the Opti-PAC should be just fine.  It is designed to run 8 optic boards, so no problems there.  From my experimenting, the Happ optic boards draw a little more power than just optoswitches alone, which is all that is in the P360 base.
