design questions....look at pic
« on: January 14, 2004, 07:37:56 pm »
okay look at the top tv holder part of this cab.  im making one similar.  if you look at the tv part it appears curved in the front.  im wondering how they did this.  i know to make the top and bottom of this box/holder thing for the screen...curved which is not hard.  but when i put in the speaker panels, they are flat, and will looke like a box is in between two curved pieces instead of the whole thing being curved.

after looking at this quite a bit - it does seem as though the screen is set back, behind a bezel.  You could make the top and bottom pieces curved as you said. The speaker panels may actually be curved and part of the cabinet.  You could angled speaker mounts to make the speakers aligned towards the player.  See my very very crappy sketch.  I really can't draw for $h1t.

I don't know sorry.  I guess frame is the box that it will go in.  Curved top and bottom.  If you reduce the curve you could do the speaker-tv-speaker in sections like below.  Are you using the speakers on the tv or separate speaker sections like the crapier pic below

It looks like a wooden construction to me with a plastic bezel encapsulating the screen and speakers... Probably a vaccuforming jobbie?
Case modder + mame fan = cab buildin' time ;)

okay, the speakers will be on the left and right and will be housed in their own little compartments.  the tv and speakers will all be held in a box type thing.

So it all depends if you want to get away with a
\|___|/ shape, or if you want it all curved.  I think the angle-straight-angle would look fine with a curved top and bottom.  You just need to draw it out as best you can to make sure you have a shallow curve and the angles for the speaker compartments also shallow.  FYI - the cabinet for my video (TV sits on top) has a curved top and bottom, but the glass doors are straight across - looks fine.

Could be plastic or metal. Quite a few boomboxes have metal speaker grills that are curved.

hmmm, seems like a lot of work and not worth it.  ill just make a small curve, and then put the speaker sections on at an angle...some of the bottom will overlap but i guess that's okay right?

well i was trying to get some answers from you cdbrown, but howard felt like flexing is nerdy code knowledge muscles and banned me from the chat room for not wanting to talk to him.....ANYWAY.....i guess im just going to have to angle the speaker panels so that it appears as curved as possible, you think this is a good idea?

If I wanted that curve I'd just put a cloth grill over everything.  Speakers would be flat, but set back a little on one side.   The grill cloth would over everything, and curve with the top and bottom making the whole thing look curved.

That's a good idea. The only two tools you'll ever need: Duct tape and a staple gun.
