Base of cabinet - 2x4 or MDF enough?
« on: February 27, 2016, 07:37:56 pm »
The last cabinet I built was in the early 90's in wood shop. It had a lot of middle support to hold a heavy CRT. This time, I'm doing less support in the middle area and only going with a LCD (and no console shelf).

But, since I'm using less mid support, I'm wondering if I should use a 2x4 reinforced base... I've seen some with them, and some without. But, if I move it around a bit, I want it to be sturdy enough to not fall apart. I'm guessing not, but I want to be really sure on it as I'm getting to the point to get everything screwed together. I have all the parts (sans plexiglass and marquee), just time to put things together and play some games. :)

Thanks! I've found a ton of ideas so far, and it's finally coming to fruition.

I like a 2x4 base, it both makes the cabinets sturdy and it makes them easy to repair if they get damaged.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I built my base out of 2x4s also.  I don't feel it would have been sturdy enough without it.

Awesome. Thanks!

I'm finishing my control panel this weekend (vinyl comes in from Gameongrafx today!). Hopefully the rest of the cab next week. 2x4's it is. I already have the wood, just didn't want to add more wood unnecessarily!
