People using your trackball as a mouse...
« on: February 25, 2016, 08:08:10 am »
...where do you put your buttons?

My heart is telling me that either at the top of the panel out of the way would look nicest, but my head is telling me that a button at the bottom left of the ball is most comfortable. My other side of my head is telling me to screw additional buttons and use a couple of the ones i already have (either the 1p 2p or just some of P1's buttons)

So... what do you do?!

I put mine at the top of the CP by the power button.  Can't accidentally be hit and is out of the way.

I put all three top center of the control panel.     In the "admin button" section.

I ended up installing them on the left and right sides of my control panel box because I wanted some side buttons as pinball flippers. I map the mouse 1,2  buttons as my flippers in pinball games. They're out of the way of typical use and help tremendously when it comes to admin time. ;)

That kind of leads into my followup question...

Is there any reason people don't use the existing buttons and feel the need for separate ones?

I have a six button layout and use Player 1 buttons 5 and 6 as mouse buttons.

Depending on the emulator/software being used, sometimes mouse buttons can cause mapping issues, eg; software that won't allow mapping to mouse buttons or won't allow mouse functions to be remapped to different key inputs.

I use player 1 start and player 2 start as the mouse buttons. Dedicated mouse buttons are generally seen as a sign that you are doing it wrong.

That sounds like a good idea.   But I do believe your?  or  "That"  stance is way too harsh an attitude to have.

Maybe you want to have your mouse buttons closer to the actual ball... rather than reaching up deep into the panel, for example...

There may be other alternative reasons too.  Thats all that came from a brief moment of consideration.

At the end of the day.. its Your cabinet.  Do what works best for you,  and what makes you happy.

Sounds like someone has dedicated mouse buttons on their control panel!
