Speaker Hookup?
« on: January 13, 2004, 08:05:46 pm »
I have some old 5 1/2 car speakers(4 ohm) layer around and they fit perfectly in my cab. How would I go about wiring these? I would like a subwoofer located underneth so are there any hi quality computer speakers that come with an on board amp for the speakers? I could just splice into the wire or even better if it had terminals I could run new wire. They are rated 40RMS or 80 watts max each.

That is a great question...  I have used 3 peice computer speakers with great results.  For my last cab, I actually installed a car amp that I hooked up to my power supply from my computer.  It was only a 30 watt and I turned the gain almost all the way down.  Great results!  I started looking around for more options and the cheapest car amp that I can found is about $24.  Any other ideas out there?

I have also heard that the Creative Labs 2.1 system can be rigged to give pretty good results. Of course you will be only sending 7 watts to each speaker but that should be enough. Also the subwoofer is great so for $20-$40 + the price of the car speakers you could have a pretty decent system.

BTW when you have an amp and a power converter how exactly do you go about hooking it to a computer. I am a car audio fiend but never delt with it in a home situation.
