All Killer, No Filler Gamelists Part 3 - SPORTS
« on: February 18, 2016, 09:51:03 pm »
Directory of "All Killer, No Filler Gamelists"

JUST BECAUSE A GAME IS IN THIS LIST DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WORKING 100% CORRECTLY IN MAME.
LOTS OF GREAT GAMES ARE PERFECTLY PLAYABLE, BUT HAVE SMALL SOUND OR GRAPHICS ISSUES CAUSING THEM TO BE LISTED AS NOT PERFECTLY EMULATED IN MAME.
DO NOT USE A NO-NAG VERSION OF MAME AND THEN COMPLAIN TO MAME DEVS AFTER YOU'VE REMOVED THE GIANT RED BOX THEY PUT THERE TO INFORM YOU THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE GAME.  IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO ASK ABOUT AN ISSUE, ALWAYS TEST WITH THE UNADULTERATED OFFICIAL MAME BUILD FIRST.

EDIT: bat file attached
Needed CHDs (batch file does not copy over):
hyperath
nagano98
blitz

Original post:

Our third installment.......

Here's the idea:

All killer/No filler gamelists per genre for people who are interested in quality over quantity.
Yes it's subjective, but I trust the judgement of people with a passion for a genre.
This is not about listing every game in a genre.
That would put us right back up to scrolling through thousands of games, most of which suck.

Arcade games only

Next up is SPORTS (including wrastlin'!).  This is the list straight from my cab.  It was made along the lines of "hey, there's a volleyball game.  I don't have a volleyball game in my list yet".
I have no idea if a lot of the games are any good or not, or if there are better ones out there that I may have skipped over because a similar game had snazzier graphics.

No trackball games!!  Not everyone has a trackball, and if you do it's easy enough find a list of trackball games.
Standard microswitch joystick only....except for blitz.  ;)

So what's missing?  What isn't so great and needs pulled?

The short and sweet version.

Great 1000 Mile Rally
NBA Jam
Track and Field but only if you have leaf buttons.
Pick a WWF game, they are all terrible but people do ask for them.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

If you're going to include joystick racers in Sports, you gotta have Vs. Excite Bike.

Also, Football Champ. Incredibly fun if you have 2-player controls (and beer).

I have a soft spot for Cyberball. It's a bit clunky, but it can be fun.

And for stupid nostalgia's sake, I still play VS. RBI Baseball every now and then.

Great 1000 Mile Rally
NBA Jam
Track and Field but only if you have leaf buttons.
Pick a WWF game, they are all terrible but people do ask for them.

You do realize how unhelpful you are in these threads right? If you aren't going to give constructive criticism , suggest adding any specific games with a reason, or suggest removing specific games for a reason then don't post. Why is this such a foreign concept to you?

Add:
Alpine Ski (its a classic!) Skiing is a sport right? Must be you have extreme downhill on here
Final Blow - Silly fun boxing game, was ported to Genesis as James "Buster" Douglas boxing
Jitsuryoku!! Pro Yakyuu - Its basically the arcade version of the NES game "Bases Loaded" my fave baseball game
Ring King - Just for Nostalgia?
Run and Gun (RnG2 is the sequel but the original is better)
Super Sidekicks 3 - Best soccer game on NeoGeo IMO
US Championship V'Ball - love this game
Overtop - Add this after you drop a drift out game

Drop:
Arch Rivals ; if you dont have Hit the Ice you cant have this  >:D
Baseball Stars , the sequel is better in every way
Beach Festival - its an incredibly slow placed and boring game
Dunk Mania - NBA Showtime is a better 3D basketball game by far
Nitro Ball - This is a a run and gun game
Title Fight - special controls (2 8ways, I think they twisted too)
WWF Super stars, Wrestlefest is much better. Im indifferent to Royal Rumble.

Not sure if they count:
Stakes Winner 2 - Horse racing is a sport too right?

Change?
Neo Drift out is the sequel to Drift out 94 , so pick one. Other than different tracks, pretty much the same game
Slammasters 2 :Ring of Dest. for the first one. SM2 is a 1 on 1 fighting game, SM1 is a 4 player wrestling game

And you misspelled Tecmo Bowl, and I dont know if you need to specify "Not play choice 10 version"

Games I'd add:

Final Round
Kageki
Pit Fighter
Ring King / King of Boxer
Super Punch Out

I kind of liked Wrestle War as a kid and was always bummed it never came to the US as a Genesis port.  Playing it as an adult I'm kind of eh.....

Final Round is kinda like ....if they make Rock'em Sock'em Robots into an arcade game. You just like it cause one of the guys is "Jabbin Jim"
Kageki is , street boxing I guess
Pit Fighter is a fighting game, I dont really see it as a sports game.
Totally agree with Super Punch out; great game.

I suggested Super Side Kicks 3!

I own the actual cart for 2, but I always liked the pace of 3 better. Tehkan World Cup is just awful though, I just really dont like the overhead soccer games. I think Taito Cup Finals is better than Hat Trick Hero, and tecmo is pretty good. No Pleasure Goal or Soccer Brawl?

I have the same cartridge, great game indeed, perhaps i chose this one because I played a little more than the 3, and I love Tehkan, I've played a lot in the 80s and I am now owns a PCB with a generic cocktail cab.
How could I forget the Taito Finals Cup! with the hyper shot! Excellent game indeed.
And for Pleasure Goal and Soccer Brawl, maybe a little less in the competitive experience, but so much up in the fun part!

It is also obvious that we are using completely different criteria. Your lists are quite long. Which can result in the same kind of choice paralyzation that one has when they have the entire mame arcade library installed. You have 60 games listed in this category, there has to be at least 10 decent categories to stick games in. That means a 600 game list.

I am simply presenting alternative shorter lists for people who might only want to present a 100 game list to their guests. I believe both of our lists have real value.

And here is the latest version of that list.

Great 1000 Mile Rally
NBA Jam
Track and Field if you have leaf buttons
WWF Wrestlefest
Vs. Excitebike
Stakes Winner 2

How I came to my list? In 15 years of Mame cabbing I have never had a guest want to play any football, baseball, hockey, volleyball, tennis or soccer game. Even when I owned actual machines of said sports they were largely ignored. Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out were left off the list due to custom joystick and dual display issues. I left off Golf and Bowling because the joystick versions of said games tend to be inferior to the trackball versions. Add Neo Turf Masters and League Bowling to my list if you really want to play those sports with a joystick. Boxing was omitted because adding it would just highlight the fact that Punch-Out is missing.

I would remove the Punch-Out games from your list for the same display and joystick issues that kept them off my list. I would also take the Blitz games off your list, they really want those 49-way sticks to play properly, and although they support 8-way sticks as an alternative it is less than ideal. Arch Rivals and Pigskin are 49-way only games and also shouldn't make the list for that reason.

The short and sweet version.

Great 1000 Mile Rally
NBA Jam
Track and Field but only if you have leaf buttons.

Then start a new thread, your objectives don't seem to align with the spirit of the thread(s). To expand further, the Vertical shooter list, Im going to use it on my vertical shooter cab*. Im not going to have many other games on that cab except vertical shooters. Your list of 5 games on that cab really wouldn't be of much benefit. These lists shouldn't be considered "the end all be all" of lists, rather a really good starting point.  Don't you agree that it'll be easier to sift through a list of 600 games instead of starting at a list of 6,000 games?

*Im not going to use the list exactly as it is, but I'll start with it and tweak it to my tastes.

Hey all - I have been following these killer/no filler threads and I really like the idea.  I built my first mame cab a few weeks ago, and proceeded to put every console emulator and the full mame rom list on it.  I was really excited to have everything in one place at first, then after about a week it hit me, the sheer amount of games is off-putting.  My solution was to start a few favorites lists (I use maximus for the front end), but my experience with arcade gaming as a kid was really just with the classics, so I have no idea about the quality of 99% of the games in the mame library.   These threads are a great base to create a more focused favorite list that is vetted by folks who have actually played the games.  So good work so far.  I am going to start by creating individual favorites lists and use these threads as the base, and then cut them down to a top 10 list per category (after I get a chance to try them all out and figure out which ones I like).  For me  I think a favorite list that has no more than 10-12 games on it may be ideal.  Basically enough in each list to fill one screen with no scrolling.  Who knows, after a while I might get down even fewer games per list.

So great work so far, these lists are a great start and can be edited down to a size that is to your liking. :)

Thanks.

On my old setup, I always kept the main gamelist limited to 200 games.  I rotated games in and out, but always kept it under 200.
IMO, it was the most you could have before scrolling through the games became a chore and it pretty much covered everything popular that my guests would want to play.

My new cab is more for myself than guests and has them broken down by genre, so it's not so bad having 600 games if they are broken down into 6 or 7 genres and you know which genre you're in the mood for.

After the final list has been hashed out, I'll create a directory thread and also attach a batch file to copy over the entire "All Killer/No Filler" romset.
I'm curious to see what the final size of the folder will be.

Alright, list has been updated.  I ditched Hat Trick Hero because Taito Cup Finals appeared to be a newer version of it.  Not sure if all these "football" games will make the final cut.  >:D

Yeah and he should start his own thread instead of trying to impose his will in some one elses. If he wants to make a "the only 100 games you need on a MAME cab thread" I'll try to help.

Alright, list has been updated.  I ditched Hat Trick Hero because Taito Cup Finals appeared to be a newer version of it.  Not sure if all these "football" games will make the final cut.  >:D

I think SSK3 and Taito Cup work for the "sim"-ish soccer arcade games
and I think Pleasure Goal (5 on 5) and Soccer Brawl (robots and ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---) cover the best 2 goofy fun arcade style soccer games.
4 Soccer titles isnt *too* bad

Oh and drop 3 count bout, its just a terrible 1 on 1 fighting game / terrible faux wrestling game

The list has something like 9 or 10 soccer games on it, a genre that to my knowledge hasn't produced any hits outside of the Fifa and Football Manager console franchises. I would think some of those would be filler.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Alright, list has been updated.  I ditched Hat Trick Hero because Taito Cup Finals appeared to be a newer version of it.  Not sure if all these "football" games will make the final cut.  >:D

I added all the requested games for the time being with the intention of cutting the weakest of them later.....
I will probably keep more than I personally want (which would be one or zero), because I know it's important to other people.

I thought Heavy Smash would have been mentioned by now. I'm nominating it.

I ended up putting Outfoxies in my Sports list. It's gotta go somewhere, and this seemed like the best fit.

I also started with a Sports/Racing list, but I eventually realized that an any given time, I was either in the mood for a racing game or for a sports game, but hardly ever at the same time. Splitting the category was made harder by the fact that the combined category was already one of my shorter lists, but it didn't feel right keeping them combined.

Added Heavy Smash.

Added Outfoxies to the Vs Fighting.  It had previously been mentioned in that thread.
Looking at it again.  It's 2 players trying to knock down each other's strength meters.
That be 2 player versus regardless of the weaponry.

Somehow in my 13 years here I gotten the idea that this was a discussion forum and didn't realize I had to start a new thread because I might have a different idea than the thread poster.

Only 13 years? Newb.

If the idea of this thread is to make a list of the 50 or 60 best games in a genre, and your idea is the best 3 or 4, you should start a new thread or participate with something more than trimming the existing list down to such a scant collection.

I dont think 4 soccer games is too many, there is 4 or more (american) football games.

maybe

Vs. Excite Bike (playable on single horizontal monitor?)
MIKE TYSON'S PUNCH OUT! (same issue?)

Excitebike is a horizontal game, and the Vs. version is for single monitor. It could equally well be included in the Classics category, but would make sense here as there are other joystick racer titles already present.

While also a horizontal game, all arcade versions of Punch Out (and Mike Tyson's Punch Out) I can find are dual-monitor. It's playable in MAME on one monitor, but it's not really ideal as it's vertically split-screened. This game is really best either dedicated or via NES.

If we were doing music, it would make sense to reference billboard for something like this list.  Does anyone know of anything similar?  It would be worth knowing which games made the most money year by year.  Or manufacturing numbers.

To the specific category, I don't understand how there could be a no filler list with most of these games and not include excitebike.  For all the grumbling about paiges high grading of the list, it could be noted as a highly experienced opinion of games that absolutely should not be left out.  Other than excitebike, the only game I remember playing or have been asked about as an adult is RBI Baseball.  Baseball is big in So Cal.  That might be part of the reason.

I'll get around to pruning some football games, both American and otherwise.

But in the meantime, I'm thinking of adding some games.
I haven't played these yet, but figured I'd get some opinions ahead of time.

GOLDEN TEE (joystick version)
PEBBLE BEACH GOLF
SIMPSONS BOWLING (with joystick control option chosen)
WORLD DARTS
RING RAGE
SUCCESS JOE
CARKET BALL
COOL BOARDERS
WATER SKI
LETHAL CRASH RACE

How about some fishing games?

Excellent you added 2020 Super Baseball - ripper game!

I nominate "Winning Spike" for a volleyball game.

Nobody in their right mind is going to play 'PING PONG MASTERS '93' it's barely a game at all.
Speed Spin is my personal favourite table tennis game, highly playable, highly addictive, quickly followed by Konami's Ping Pong and Table Tennis Champions (although IMHO that's a bit too difficult)

Billiard Academy Real Break is probably the best of the overhead pool games with a focus more on fun rather than overly serious, although if you're trying to keep the list 100% clean might be a little over sexualized,

Up later than I should be play testing most of these.  A few didn't show up in my FE, meaning that I'm missing some needed files.
I'll get those sorted in the next few days.

Planning to drop these, unless other people have a high opinion of them:

Backfire! - have enough games like this.  This is the weakest one IMO

Final Blow - I thought the controls and gameplay were crappy

Hat Trick - It doesn't do much for me.  Keep it because it's a classic?

Jitsuryoku!! Pro Yakyuu - Seems like a great baseball game without an english version.  somehow I got into a menu to change my lineup or something and everything was in Japanese.  Seems like this would cripple the game for people who don't read Japanese.

Pleasure Goal - one of the weaker soccer games on the list?

Soccer Brawl - Seems to be a rehashed version of one of the other snk soccer games.  What's weird is that I enjoyed the other one.
This one has a power meter added.  I  can play the non-combat one fine, but can't get the hang of this one.  Just me?

Slap Shot - controls and gameplay just aren't clicking for me.  puck ends up going back and forth horizontally between the boards a lot.
                  Is it just me?

Other games I want opinions on:

Success Joe - I want this type of boxing gameplay in the list, but I feel like I'm just button mashing and there is no timing or visual cues to create the gameplay.  What you say?

World Darts - bit of a weird game.  It's like you're trying to control a drunken hand with the joystick.  The countdown timer is your total time to take all 3 shots.  I want to like it, but wish the drunken hand was a bit easier to control.  I could get a single trip 20 each round, but it feels random to be able to get the hand in the correct vicinity.  Give it a try and report back.  :)

Winter Heat - can't tell if it's any good because my PC is too slow.  I thought I'd be able to play in slow motion, but I have no idea how I'm supposed to be controlling the skier from the weird angles.  My guy just falls over.

Billiard Academy Real Break is probably the best of the overhead pool games with a focus more on fun rather than overly serious, although if you're trying to keep the list 100% clean might be a little over sexualized,

It's got the exact gameplay I'd like to have, but being able to pan and zoom on the pictures of the women in lingerie is a bit much.
I'll add it to my own list, but comment it out on the batch file I make for this list.
People can add it if they want.

EDIT: Oh and Paigeoliver is correct about all the WWF games being horrible, but they stay because people will want them for the sake of nostalgia.
Choosing Sgt Slaughter was fun.  A few minutes into the game, the nostalgia wears off.

Hat trick isn't near as much fun playing the computer, the real fun is with 2P action.

Pro Yakyuu - I knew the language barrier might be an issue. Its just a fun baseball game. You can drop it if you think changing pitcher or subbing in hitters is a deal breaker.
Pleasure Goal - I like that its 5 on 5 instead of 11 on 11, but feel free to cut
Soccer Brawl - Suggested for variety , its one of the better goofy soccer games but that's not saying much
Success Joe - not a fan
World Darts - I feel the exact same way
Winter Heat - never played, dont really want to, I have no opinion.

Looks cool, added.

Getting tired of working on this one.
Consider the current list pretty much final.
I will try to get a batch file up for it this weekend.
