Opinions on less clicky 20g Zippy's vs Cherry switches
« on: February 15, 2016, 01:22:06 am »
Hey guys,

I am about to order my IL buttons from paradise arcade and I saw that they offer a 20g (virtually no click) microswitch as an option instead of the 75g Cherry microswitch. I have heard people complaining about the clicking on Cherry switches and I honestly do not remember the buttons in the early 90s clicking like a cherry would but maybe its just me.

I have no seen where anyone has talked about going with this light action zippy microswitch to avoid that clicking sound and have less force to push the buttons. To me, it seems like a great option to go with instead of leaf switches. I like leaf switches but I think maybe these zippy's would last longer and be less hassle.

Opinions??? Cause I am about to order and I don't want to regret ordering a whole bunch of the zippy's if there is some major downfall compared to the cherry's. :)

I have some of the Zippy 20g light-action switches on both IL and GGG Prime buttons and I like them. You can still feel and hear the detent-click on actuation but it's about as unobtrusive as any you'll find. Compared to a 75g Cherry it's a world of difference in terms of sound and feel, and it's a difference for the better imho. There's enough physical resistance in the switch and button spring that you won't accidentally trigger one with a resting finger. They're still not really comparable to the silkiness of a leaf, but the feel and control are as good as I've ever felt from a switch.

Thx.. They sound great :)

I wasn't crazy about going with  cherry's so I think I will go for these. My IL eurostix will still have cherry's but I may one day switch to the 20g on those too to tone down the clicking. I honestly don't remember buttons or joysticks clicking like that in the early 90s but I know they used micros after 1989 so not sure what type of action the switches had back then.

I'm using the same 20g Zippys, levered in this case, on my Ultimarc T-stiks (aka IL 4-8-Way; they are the spring version of the Magstik. The T-Stik/Mag-Stik is probably the 'stiffest' and 'clickiest' of all switch-based sticks in stock form.) I modded these sticks with weaker springs and the afore-mentioned 20g switches with very good results, and haven't had any durability issues to date.

I'm not sure that you would need to go to a switch quite so light on a Eurostick as the feel on them is so much lighter in general, but if the clicking drives you crazy they are a valid option.

Good luck!
