Re: All Killer, No Filler Gamelists Part 1 - SHMUPS almost finalized

I've play tested all the vertical ones.  There was one bios missing.
The plain 1943.zip is missing and needed.
A couple of games (Raiden Fighters Jet and ...something else) require you to let the game make a looooong update and then change a jumper setting in MAME before they will be playable.

I will put together instructions and update the batch file this weekend.

Stick a fork in this one it is done.

I ended up removing Cube Quest because it is a trackball game and requires a 10GB CHD.

Also had to drop Hacha Mecha Fighter because there is no sound.
There is a nag screen stating that the sound is not working in MAME.
I could have sworn I'd played this on my cab with an older version of MAME and it worked fine, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: Also Juno First was still on the horizontal list despite it being vertical, so if you grabbed the vertical bat file earlier, that one was missing.  The bat file currently attached has been corrected.

The three "All Killer, No Filler" thread links added to the wiki game list links here.

Will update as more lists are added in this series.   ;D

I've always used the fast forward feature in mame while games "update". Usually takes a 20 minute update down to just a couple minutes.

There's a working bootleg version in MAME, with sound.

I would add:

OUTZONE (Toaplan's absolutely best game)
STORM BLADE (Much more fun than all of the Aero Fighters games)
SUPER SPACE INVADERS ’91 (it's awesome)
IBARA (it's arguably better than Black Label according to those who have put a lot of time into these games)
NAMCO CLASSIC COLLECTION VOL. 1 instead of GALAGA (it has Galaga and Galaga Arrange, which is super cool)
XX MISSION (because it's by UPL/NMK)

Outzone gameplay:
Super Space Invaders '91 gameplay: (well, it's the Japanese rom, but you know... )

Isn't Radiant Silvergun vertical?

Gameplay is vertical, but the screen is horizontal.

OUTZONE - Though it plays like a shmup for the most part, it's a guy running around on the ground with a gun.  So it's going in the RUN N Gun category.
STORM BLADE - added
SUPER SPACE INVADERS '91 - added
IBARA - eh, there was some discussion earlier...sticking with Ibara Black out of laziness if nothing else
NAMCO CLASSICS - added, Galaga and Xevious deleted
XX Mission - could just be that I'm not a big enough fan of the genre, but meh.

Not that I care for it, but since Galaga seems to be such a popular game, I wouldn't delete it. Sure, you save one whopping entry in the list, but later on guests playing the cab always will ask the owner 'Where is Galaga?', foolishly not realizing that they have to start Namco classics.

I think you should look at Space Raiders.... it's unlike most of the shootem ups you have listed.

Anyone want to help a n00b Schmupper?

I haven't played most of these games, but I played tons of the classics. I recently built a 8 way vertical cabinet with 3 buttons. Can you tell me what the top 3 games on this list I should check out? Specifically, I'd like one that isn't super difficult.

For me, the top 3 fun and easier vertical shmups are:

Rayforce
Batsugun Special Version
Battle Garegga Type 2

All have great music, graphics and gameplay and can be quarter fed all the way through.

Garegga has an adaptive difficulty that lowers with every death and Type 2 can be less frustrating than vanilla because the enemy bullets are easier to see.

Batsugun Special Version is easier than the original version in several ways, especially the smaller ship hitbox, which makes it really fun for me.

Not sure what rom versions are in the list, though.
