threaded hex driver stability for joystick mount
« on: January 31, 2016, 08:50:34 am »
Was about to install the threaded hex screws i got from GGG to mount the joysticks under the control panel and I got to overthinking and wanted to make sure I didn't need to apply some glue or epoxy, or if that would cause more issues.  Basically wondering if anyone has had these things pull out of 5/8 MDF before or at least trying to avoid a mess later.  On slagcoin they state that the joystick shaft should be close to 23-24mm from top panel to bottom of joystick ball.  I measured the joysticks (GGG roundhouse) and it has that much shaft length mounting straight on the backside of the MDF without any routing, so that was my plan, having the plate directly on the backside screwed into these inserts.  Thanks for any input or advice on pitfalls to avoid cause I am not that confident in MDF holding abilities.

No need for epoxy/glue -- it will only cause trouble.

These inserts are very easy to install as long as you pay attention while installing them.

Drill as straight down as possible -- if you aren't comfortable doing this free-hand, use a drill press or drill guide.

Use a drill stop collar or piece of tape to ensure you get the proper depth.

If you aren't comfortable starting the inserts squarely, Rodney linked to a video here that shows how to use a drill press to install them.

Do not overtighten -- it can pulp the MDF.

Install the insert right the first time -- if you back it out it will definitely pulp the MDF.

Thanks for the info.  I don't have a drill press, but I will give it a go and drill down as straight as possible.
