Arcade sports games worth playing.
« on: January 21, 2016, 08:15:39 am »
A friend wants a bar top for NBA JAM and other spots games. I told him I would look into some options but I was never into sport video games.

I no longer have a work shop to use so having some one build my desires for me would have to be the way to go. You would not believe how affordable it is to have costume furniture made here in Nepal.

I was thinking:
 - Two player CP.
 - 3 or 4 buttons per player.
 - 20 inch 2007 FP monitor.
 - Mini SLG (just got one to play with and love it)

I just don't know of a whole lot of 90's sports arcade games. The only ones that come to mind are all the NBA JAM's, NHL Open ICE, & punch out. I'm sure about this one. What spots games would you guy's add.

You'll only need 3 buttons for the sports games.  With 4 you could put the NeoGeo and Namco fighters on there.

I've been wanting to post the genre gamelists that my front-end is divided up into.  One of them is sports.
I'll try to get to it in the next few days.

I can never remember what button does what on the sports games, so I added instructions for some of them on my cab.

edit your title, spot games was confusing :p

Beyond the ones you mentioned,  here are my faves:

Tecmo Bowl
Pigskin 621 AD
NBA Hangtime
NFL Blitz
Run and Gun (there are 2 but the first is WAY better)
Baseball Stars Professional
Super Sidekicks

But this link might help:

I love your Neo Geo Evolution slim, the instruction card is a good idea. NFL blitz, pigskin, and arch rivals are two more for the list. I could add Neo Geo bass ball as well.

In addition to what others said:

Neo Turf Masters
US Championship V'Ball
League Bowling
Super High Impact
Baseball Stars 2

From the 80's but worth checking out:
Hat Trick
Track & Field/Hyper Sports/'88 Games

If you have a trackball:
Golden Tee Fore Complete (if your computer can handle it)
Golden Tee 3D, 97, 98, 99, 2K, Classic
World Class Bowling
Krazy Bowl

A couple more I thought of.....

Bang Bead - It's a super simple pong type game with a futuristic sports vibe.

There are also a few good joystick controlled Neo Geo driving games if you wanted to push the definition of sports game that far.
Thrash Rally, Neo Drift Out, Over Top

Virtua Tennis on Demul emulator if you have the horsepower.  I have no interest in tennis in real life, but for some reason I really enjoy this game.
Simple controls and snazzy graphics I guess.  I picked up the PC version cheap, but haven't tried it out yet.

It’s more "sports entertainment" but wrestling games are fun.

WWF wrestlefest
Mat mania/exciting hour

I also have great memories playing hat trick hero 95.

IMO some of the best sports games were on the consoles. If you want to put console games on there, then:
NHL 95
Ken Griffey Baseball
Madden

Most of the good ones are already mentioned but

Capcom Sports Club, Two on Two Open Ice Challenge, and it seems like there is another Neo Geo battle/football/soccer type game that I can't remember off the top of my head.

nah this one has like a futuristic death match quality to it.... it might be Capcom, I didn't see it on the MVS wiki list.

I was thinking the same thing, but couldn't find it.
IIRC there were 3 people on each team and you bounced a ball (or some round object) off the sides of the arena.
Pretty sure it wasn't super dodgeball, more futuristic than that.

EDIT:  and it had some name that wasn't descriptive of it at all.  Some plural made up noun with an "s" on the end. (what the competitors were called)

Blitz is more trouble than it is worth, requires 5 times the computer hardware of anything else mentioned and it really wants to have 49-way sticks and not 8-ways. I would leave it off.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

It sounds like Speedball though that wasn't in the arcade.

Heavy Smash!  Close Badmouth, the s was at the end and it was Data East not Neo Geo as I first thought.

Played some tonight, pretty fun.

Also both the Super Dodge Balls.

I really loved the Mutant League games on the Genesis.  They play with 3 buttons so would work here as well.

I'm not sure if this fits as it is an 80's horizontal game but Super Basketball by Konami was one of my favorites back in the day. I still play it regularly in MAME.

other than 3 on 3 it sounds like you're describing WindJammers , the best most redonkulously priced legit MVS game ever. Love it, have a neogeo cab, cant afford the cart.

Checked out Heavy Smash.  It wasn't that.
I probably am mashing together Bang Bead, Super Dodgeball and WindJammers.
