What to do to with an atari area 51?
« on: January 17, 2016, 05:37:08 pm »
Recently I received an original atari area 51. It's working, but I think the game sucks.
What to do with it? I believe with a rom and flash drive change, you can convert it in to a area51/max force?  Max force is already a bit better, but still.

It is for sale as it is, but nobody wants it. Maybe I can do something really cool with it? (No, I won't trough it of the roof)
Even thought to mame it, but with the cp on a strange angle that won't work either.

Are there other options?  Duck hunt would be great ;) or mame with other shooting games?

Hm, found this http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=119530.0
But I'd rather not buy an aim trek due to nearly no budget for this  :'(

Before I judge, do you have any pics of the machine?   ::)

However, I will say that (depending on condition of course).  Why kill a game?  Area 51 may not be your kind of game but there may be other collectors who beg to differ.  If it looks good and is working...  Perhaps find a better donor cabinet (especially if the machine has original sideart - again, can't tell without pics so it all depends).  Upgrading to the Area 51 combo kit is fine, but converting it to MAME?  On the other hand if it's in horrible shape and need to be re-finished, etc... Again, it all depends.

P.S. - Area 51 is WAY better than Maximum Force IMHO.  Newer, doesn't always mean better...

I know, I also prefer it original.
And if I would mame it, I would always keep the original pcb and wiring harnas. And no spinner, trackball and 88 player joystick setup.

I would give it a 7.5 out of 10, it looks pretty decent,  original sideart, good tmolding, and the monitor has no burn. I tried to sell it here for 6 months, but no interest whatsoever. (No, no high price)
So I was thinking, if nobody wants it, maybe I can convert it, so it is at least fun for me when playing a game.

Edit, maybe even install a nes with zapper? Is something like that possible? Duckhunt  :afro:
BTW I'm in Spain,  you can't easily swap this with another machine, because there aren't any left.

Again, I want to keep it original, so I would like to keep all the original parts, but I wouldn't mind more shooting games.

Area 51 is generally considered to be one of the best light gun games ever made, while none of the nes zapper titles are actually all that good. I have a Playchoice with a gun and the mods so it has the complete nes library and the gun games usually never even get touched.

If it hasn't sold locally then you either haven't tried hard or yes your price was too high.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Guns and board are probably worth $150ish... just flip it and buy something you want.

If it was closer to Sweden I would buy it... all I have is non-working PCB.
Building, collecting and playing arcade machines :)

I asked for 150 euro for the cab, and no interest. It's not a big hobby in Spain,  people only want a mame cab.
I'll try   the duo game update with flash drive, only played maximum once, and thought it was a bit better than 51,

As a last resort I can part it out  :timebomb:

Dont know if it was because of this, but the machine was picked up last week for 225€
New owner is gonna mame it, didnt care much about the artwork and pcb.

Too bad, but I have more space for a nice dedicated game.
