Display garbled due to ATOM modified BIOS?
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:01:04 pm »
Hi!

I have noticed a problem with my setup, possibly a bug.

I have windows 7 x64, MSI Radeon HD 7770 and installed and working CRTEmu 2.0 driver.

The problem is: I have a garbled display in interlaced resolutions like 768x576 and 640x480.
The only way to get rid of the garbled display is to go Device Manager > Display Adapter and Have Disk and to point and reinstall the CRTEmu driver 2.0. After this is done, screen is displayed perfectly and everything is fine. BUT, after the computer is restarted, display is back to being garbled. And I have to repeat the procedure to get it back working.

When I say garbled, I mean the screen is looking all blocky as if it is missing an odd or even line or something like that.

I accidentally found the solution (or a cause) to this problem when I reflashed the original video card BIOS back. Without ATOM patched BIOS there is no problem with garbled display anymore.

This is the only thing that is bugging me from having a perfect setup. Should I get another video card? Like HD 7850? I need a powerful graphics card due to Dreamcast and Playstation emulation.

EDIT: I have just figured out that I dont have to reinstall the driver, it is enough just to Disable and then Enable the driver in Device Manager.

Hi R-Typer,

Yeah I've recently experienced this problem with my HD 5450. I have a provisional hack to deal with it, don't know if it'll work for you.

You need to create a new task with Task Scheduler (Windows + R, Taskschd.msc)

Give administrator's rights to this task. Set it to trigger on each session logon. Now for the action select devutil64.exe, the little helper program that comes with CRT Emudriver 2.0.

For its arguments, set reset "pci_id", where pci_id is your video card PCI identifier, e.g. mine is:

reset "PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6811&SUBSYS_048D1043&REV_00"

(notice the double quotations!)

Now each time it starts a session it will reset the video card and all should be fine, apart from a somewhat ugly resync at windows start, and the display numbers being renumbered, but that's all.

Let me know if it works for you.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

After some time I have experienced two issues so far:

1. sometimes it happens that display looks like it has lost brightness. white color is about 50% darkened. Manually enabling/disabling Display adapter helps to restore brightness.
2. upon task scheduler reseting PCI device, all icons on my desktop get randomly rearranged.

That's all so far. I'll be testing this more.

I also experienced the issue of with brightness once, maybe some experimentation changing the exact event that triggers the reset might do something.

I occasionally get the brightness issue on my Win7 desktop PCs - my general purpose ones that don't have CRT_emudriver installed, or anything. So, it must be some kind of bug in Windows. A quick fix used to be to run the display calibration app, click next then cancel. However, I don't think this worked the last time I tried, so I just had to re-boot.
