Today's Pickup: An Olympia
« on: January 11, 2016, 01:51:31 am »
This belonged to a friend of mine. He picked it up this summer when we went on a road trip to nab my Mario Bros.  As far as i know its an Olympia, still no idea what game was in it as it's art doesn't line up with any of the Olympia games i can find pictures of. Its not a very large cabinet, and the artwork is amazingly cool.

Plans for this are pretty basic, I want to clean it up, get the monitor tuned in, rebuild the control panel, and then toss a few Smup PCB's i have with a switcher inside. I was thinking SSF Macross, Raiden, Aero Fighters, and the Dangar board thats in there now.

I need to try and understand Robotron better. Seems like everyone but me likes that game. Every time I try to play it I just just get overwhelmed by all the chaotic ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- happening on the screen at once.

It grows on you....

I didn't understand the hubub, and never played it back in the day etc etc.....

But after playing for a while I now have a dual leaf build planned for the future.

You gotta play Robotron on leafs to really get the hang of it. I totally agree with X2 on this point.

Truth be told, i've played it once, in MAME on my buddy's converted Golden Tee cab. like one quarters worth of play.

I was HOOKED.  Can't get it out of my head.

I hate unlimited continues. it makes the score almost pointless. if you have enough coins or your in mame and its free you can just play through it. I'm working on a game list of just high score games like galaga donkey Kong ect. Not saying metal slug isn't fun to play through.

There is no option to turn off the continues on Smash TV (even in the Adjustments & Diagnostic Screen).  (I own one).  However, that game is so difficult (and LONG) that without continues it would be impossible to finish on 1 credit.

Nobody has ever really completed Smash TV.  That game gets boring as hell after 10 minutes.
This forum needs more threads about Arcade 1Up cabinets.

My guess is that it is an alternate-artwork Vega. While the art is different on each cabinet it still matches the same descriptions.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Cleaned up the controls, did a little wood repair, cut a new cardboard bezel, and washed the outside surfaces. This was one filthy ---smurfette---.

Still need to pull and cap the monitor (there a little pull on the one edge), Clean the inside, plan a reproduction of the CP, and get a Jamma switcher and board rack installed.

Dangar?

Yeah, it's pretty cool. We might do a Gameplay video on the youtube channel.  It's kinda like the 1941 series, but with robots, and a ship that transforms in and out of a robot. And its hard. Like fairly hard.
