  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Hi, I'm new to this forum and a total newbie.

I'm here on the hope to get some sensible feedback as well as reliable opinions.

So I hope there will be generous and patient people willing to help me. Thank you all in advance!  :notworthy:

I would like to buy everything needed  for my arcade control panel and one of my doubts is which trackball and which spinner buy between Electric ICE-T Deluxe RGB Arcade Trackball V2.5 (by GroovyGameGear) vs U-Trak (by Ultimarc) and TurboTwist 2 Arcade Spinner Control (by GroovyGameGear) vs SpinTrak (by Ultimarc).

I read various threads on this forum (and elsewhere) but could not find a satisfactory answer: in my opinion most people prefer to express a general and overly tactful judgment (something on the line of "both are excellent" and "equivalent") which, actually, is not helpful at all.

I already know that both sellers provide high quality and reliable products.

I just want to know the differences between the two (four) products - that surely exists, however minimal.

In other words I would like to know opinions in favor of one or the other, even based on minimal details or personal preferences (motivated) even seemingly insignificant ("eg. looks nicer").

Trackball in detail (things that interest me):

Electric ICE-T stated features

1) "Custom-made 3" Electric Ice Ball. Unlike other translucent trackballs the material captures the light instead of acting like a lens. The ball is highly polished. Perfect diffusion of the light and the exact same size and weight as the stock white ball that is normally used. Ultra-high scratch resistance......"

Beyond vendor's advertising: how does in reality? How about U-Trak ball, in comparison?

2) "Illuminated by the NOVA-TB-RGB™ lighting unit with an extremely high light output capability of up to 15 Super-Bright LEDs".......

How compare the "RGB LED Illumination Kit NEW VERSION with genuine CREE ultra-bright LEDs and MOSFET drivers....." from Ultimarc U-Trak?

-------------

Spinner in detail (things that interest me):

TurboTwist 2 Arcade Spinner Control stated features

1) "Can be used with or without an optional rotational energy storage cylinder. Gives you a choice of near-zero "moment of inertia" or prolonged spin! Note: The ESC geometry has been designed and extensively playtested to provide excellent performance across all gaming genres. It does not hamper control through the excessive moment-of-inertia requirements that are often associated with spinners claiming "long spin times."" (and this is a crystal-clear direct hit to a specific competing product ;D)

2) "Accu-Twist option ...... which provides for user adjustable friction control to better simulate controls for games where free spinning may not be desireable."

So here we have a diametrically opposite approach: GroovyGameGear advertises a product that can do well with or even without a flyweight (or so they think) when Ultimarc paradoxically sells a product with 2 types of flyweights, small and LARGE (if you ever feel the need).

I saw a couple of video on YT where the SpinTrack was spinning for more than 15 seconds (small weight) and more than 25 seconds (LARGE weight). I also saw a video of TurboTwist 2 that.....perhaps did a turn and a half!!!

So wich is the better one? I mean, for games like Arkanoid and general use. And you really need the LARGE weight (SpinTrack) for games?

Is Accu-Twist useful/worth it? You will miss it in SpinTrak?

A lot of questions, I know, for which I apologize.

Every kind of opinion is welcome, in the hope that there is someone who has had the chance to see / test the above products (from both sellers) and can share a first hand impression.

I will really be grateful to whoever will address the real questions without trying to dodge or providing a vague and elusive answer.

Again, thank you very much!!!!!

A semi-random collection of answers.

1.  Just do a search on button comparisons on this forum and the review forum,  there's a lot of comparison videos out there on how the LED buttons differ.  The trackballs aren't terribly different from the buttons IMO.  In fact,  I think there's a couple video reviews of the illuminated trackballs here too.

2.  I would not recommend getting a spinner without the flyweight,  the spinner just doesn't have enough "Spin" IMO.

3.  The video you saw was without the "Energy storage cylinder" on the TurboTwist,  it'll spin for a very long time.

Honestly,  and I know it's not what you want to hear,  but you cannot go wrong with either GGG or Ultimarc products,  the differences are generally almost non-existant in terms of the products you're talking about,  they both produce such high-quality products that the differences wouldn't be apparent to any but the most discerning of customers.  All of my stuff,  and I have a lot of stuff,  is a combination of products from both companies.

First, thanks for your opinion/advice.

Some quick clarifications:

1. Of course I saw some video of the illuminated trackballs (both of them) but it is not ideal to perceive the real brightness, etc. Also I'm interested about the general "feel" you get from them (smoothness / precision / solidity)

2. I thought so  ;)

3. I suspected it. I'm primarily interested in how  the SpinTrack with small flyweight perform against the ICE-T Trackball with "ESC" (as defined by the vendor). And in the actual usefulness of the Accu-Twist that is an option that is not available on Spintrak

Thanks again!
