Updated definition for MAME?
« on: December 30, 2015, 02:33:12 pm »
Acdacd from MAMEWorld posted here about what he found in the latest commit on http://git.redump.net:
Quote
ar·cane
ärˈkān
adjective
understood by few; mysterious or secret.
"modern math and its arcane notation"

MAME is our trademark, the acronym is not important but we should not describe it as an arcade emu.

-#define FULLLONGNAME            "Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator"
+#define FULLLONGNAME            "Multiple Arcane Machine Emulator"

Haze had a blog post with various new options for the acronym a while back.  I don't see an easy way to search his blog for it.  :-\

I've always been fascinated (and annoyed) of how it is used, especially by noobs.

MAME can be a proper noun = I'm using MAME to emulate Super Fun Time Mahjong 6.

MAME can be a noun = Look at my awesome MAME I just built.  Want to play my MAME?  (noob usage)

MAME can be a verb = I'm going to MAME this old cabinet regardless of what the people on KLOV say.

EDIT: Oh and I like it when someone buys an already built cabinet and thinks Hyperspin is MAME.

The main topic for discussion when it comes to MAME doing more than just arcade games is ‘what does MAME stand for’. While people like to put forward suggestions for new names still fitting the acronym I think the most important thing is not to focus on what the letters stand for, but to simply focus on what MAME as a brand stands for. For the longest time now ‘MAME’ has represented a bridge between the past and the present, a project providing a platform to keep creations of the past accessible, providing documentation (an insight into how things worked), reusable components, and importantly a place for those interested in emulation to do their work. Just like nobody really thinks of ‘SEGA’ as ‘SErvice GAmes’ the traditional meaning of the MAME acronym is less important than actual work we do.

If you still want something to mentally associate with the ‘new MAME’ then the suggestions of “MAME And MESS, Emulators” and “Multiple Archaic Machine Emulator” do strike a chord with me, but I doubt the official acronym will be changing, it simply represents where we came from.

I always refer to my Mame cabinet as an emulator to normal people, as most of them seem to know what that means.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

More And More Emulator
When they ask, 'how much does it emulate?'... more and more and more...

Is that supposed to be to the tune of this?  'cause that's how it sounded in my head when I read it.

I think it's going to be a 90's dance music day at work today!  :applaud:
