what do you call this cabinet?
« on: January 11, 2004, 01:35:15 pm »
Hey all,
I'm debating building one of the arcade machines where you stand back to play. It usually has a widescreen TV that goes down to the floor. and then the controls are on a pedastal that is farther out from the TV. Usually you see games like Tekken or Mortal Kombat on them at arcades.
I know that most people here are sentimental to the traditional upright cabinet, but I was wondering if anyone has attempted this and what their results were. I dont even know if this type of cabinet has a name. So really any info you know would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There is a wbsite that makes on like that but be prepared to hand over fat stacks of cash for it.  I've never even seen one for sale in my area so I dont know how common they are actually get a hold of on the cheap.  But it would be pretty cool to have one if you had the space.

About the best place to get a showcase that I've seen is arcade auctions. A couple went for under $1000 at the last auction I attended in Dallas. I think one even went for $800. If I had that much money and space I wouldn't settle for anything less.

thanks for the replies.
just by using the word 'showcase' i found so many more examples.
i have a room in my house that this can fit in, and i really like that i could build it to be more modular. that way it can be broken down and moved or stored easily.
i guess i should start saving for a big TV! thanks!

Seems like something that should be fairly straightforward to build yourself. You must be either not married or have a very, very understanding wife!

i'm married, but I have a large basement with a good amount of headroom. She gave me the basement, and doesnt really care what goes in it. so as long as i dont mention total cost she'll be happy.
what would you guys recommend between using MDF or 3/4" plywood?
