Do LED Balltops Match LED Buttons?
« on: December 23, 2015, 07:14:48 pm »
Hi Guys,

I have Ultimarc's ClassicRGB in my bartop. They look pretty great.

Tonight, I received my ServoStik RGB Balltop and was disappointed to see that the balltop produces a much whiter "white," while the ClassicRGB buttons have a slightly "purplish/pinkish" hue to them.

By themselves, each look great.

Is this normal for all varieties of "milky" RGB buttons + RGB balltops?

Thanks!

If your white shows up with a purplish/pinkish tint, there may be problem with your LED board. My ClassicRGBs display a neutral white.

As white as balltop? And why would you think the problem is board and not buttons?

Edited for talking out of my rear end- looks like they are true RGB leds.

I'd try contacting ultimarc and asking them if they could sell you just the leds.
If you get a bunch from the same batch, they will probably match in color.

I'd say the first thing to try though is swapping the joystick and button leds around on the controller and see if the colors remain the same. That should rule out a problem with the controller.

If it is a problem with power affecting the color of the light, then they will probably die soon, but I doubt that is what it is.

It is most likely the color bin of the leds.
Leds are tested and grouped into various 'bins' during the manufacturing process.
One of these bin categories is color temperature, which is dictated by the phosphors in the led.

White leds are actually blue, but the phosphors absorb the blue light emitted by the led and emit it as white light.

This is for white leds only, I think RGB leds work differently, but many color changing leds are actually just a few different color leds in a single package with a microcontroller rather than true RGB.

It sounds to me like you have some cool white and some neutral (or even warm) white.
All other factors being equal, neutral white is usually more pleasant, and cool white is usually brighter.

The ideal solution would be to replace all of the leds with components from the same batch but I only have experience with high power illumination class leds so I can't help you with which ones to buy.
I think the issue is really the different materials used. The buttons are plasticky. The balltop is "glassy"

Can you remove the leds from the joysticks/buttons?
You could easily test if it is just the color of the plastic affecting the color of the light by switching them around.

Ya, that's what I'm saying. They looks the same out of the buttons/joystick.

My question is... I guess... How do others solve this problem? Are there better balltops that better match the milky RGB buttons like the ClassicRGB?

It sounds like it's just leds of different specs.
Do they sell the leds separately?
If so, that's your answer - just buy however many leds you need all at the same time from the same supplier.

After swapping things around, I've identified the problem is coming from the difference between the LEDs in the buttons and the LEDs in the balltops.

Default LEDs - Buttons have Purplish hue. Balltop has bluish hue

Balltop LED in Button = Perfect Match

Button LED in Balltop = Purplish Match

I'm working with Andy from Ultimarc to sort out
