Joysticks only registering up in Windows XP

Turned out I was plugging the 5 pin female connector upside down.

Hello,

I'm using Zero Delay USB encoder card with a Sanwa 5 pin stick in a Windows XP MAME cab and the stick is only registering up.  I've accumulated multiple joysticks, encoder cards, connector cables etc. over time and have switched all to rule them out as being defective.  I'm totally guessing it has something to do with Windows XP but don't have proficiency trouble shooting this issue.  Any ideas?  Does this problem sound familiar to anyone that has overcome it?

Many thanks in advance for advice!
