manual override for rotating monitor?
« on: November 25, 2015, 01:14:38 pm »
I know a few of you here have rotating monitors that hook up to the LPT port and drive the orientation of the monitor based on the game.  I am in the early phases of this myself and wondered if I should plan for a small pushbutton under the control panel or in the coin door area to have a manual rotate trigger incase something went bonkers.  I mainly am thinking other emulators like SNES or Genesis and the screen gets stuck at vertical or if I am overplanning this.   I am driving my motor with the L298 controller and plan to use mrotate from daoldman (thanks for the great plugin).

Thanks again, and as always really appreciate the input and ideas from everyone here.

I have a control system similar to a rotator and installed an override switch. Not for a monitor though. I used an AVR over USB rather than the parallel port.

Don't bother. I ended up using the override to test or setup the system such as the motor or the stop switch, but never used it during actual usage. If the system went bonkers where I couldn't control it through the port the system wasn't usable anyways. I moved the switch to a hidden spot and let the computer do its thing.

If you feel better about having that extra control, don't let me stop you. You can also add it later if you feel it's necessary.

I use a USB pololu simple motor controller.
On the desktop, I keep a script to rotate each direction.
If something goes bonkers I whip out the wireless keyboard, exit the front end, and click on the script.

Thanks guys for the input.  I wanted to hear a few real case stories if I didn't put an override if I would later regret it.  Sounds like I can bypass this.  Again appreciate the input.
