Control Panel with most controls on it??
« on: January 09, 2004, 11:57:29 pm »
Has anyone seen a control panel that has basically every control component on it? (ie spinner, trackball, starwars yoke, tron-style pistol grip, 8way/4way joysticks, ikari war rotary joysticks, etc).
Want to get some ideas and good layouts without having to build a very massive unit.  I know about the swappable cps but I just want one static setup.

In order to fit all your standard controls PLUS all the specialty controls on one control panel it would have to be bigger then the cabinet itself. Remember that you're going to want some space between your controls. Especially the trackball. Too many controls shoehorned onto one control panel will make gameplay miserable. When playing a game you don't want to be bumping into other controls or even worse having to contort your wrists or forearms in an awkward position just to access the control of choice. If rotating control panels sounds a bit too scary to tackle then might I suggest two or even three swappable control panels that you can quickly unlatch, unplug and switch to another. Its obviously more work then just one panel but if you have enough skills to build one then you obviously have the skills to build three. You could go the modular route but that can be a bit more tricky then just swappable ones. I would however steer away from just one giant control panel. There's just too many types of controls and not enough room for that idea.

  • Resistance is... probably a good idea.

Just lay a 4'x8' foot sheet of MDF (or your favorite building material on it's side and start drilling!

Can't be done! Well it wouldn't be pretty.

I do like some of the two tiered setups though...they cover most bases. And there's always the rotation  option...but you already  that.

Personally I prefer to have a few smaller caberet style cabs that each do a couple things (ie. vertical monitor with a 4-way and trackball) than one snarly, homely monster that trys to do everything.

Yeah, you have to make decisions and cut some stuff, because either you end up with a CP that is so stacked with controls that you don't dare _use_ any of them, or they're so wide-spread that your cabinet looks like a plane with a control-panel wing.  Make choices, make decisions, spend a little bit more for some of Oscar's adaptor plates, etc.  (i.e. do you _need_ a dedicated 4-way pac-style stick?  Or would Oscar's restrictor plates really give you what you need?)  Are you adding a control that is only applicable to 5 games?  Do you _play_ any of those games, or can you live with limited functionality? (i.e. Discs of Tron and the push/pull spinner.  While the PP Spinner also works as a normal spinner, it is an extra expense.)

Another thing to consider is that some combinations of controls don't really work out, even with all the updates and patches.  A friend of mine was never able to get 2 spinners to work to his satisfaction, even though they would have been nice for Super Sprint and the like.

I would recommend looking through the cabinets and control panels that have been built and listed here.  There are just as many negative examples as positive examples.  Learn from all of them.  I know, I know, this is all a labor of love, and if someone likes their control panel even though it has 7 sticks, 40 buttons (with no particular style or scheme), 2 trackballs, a thrustmaster analog joystick, 3 random steering wheels, enough random lighting to make a ricer jealous and is approximately the same size as a Mini Cooper, it's still theirs and they presumably love it.  It would drive me batty.

Yea.  I knew it would be very messy(or just a very big setup) and all, but I was just wondering what was the most that was fit onto one board that was actually an ok setup.   I'm sure I'm not going to have a star wars yoke or a steering wheel so that omits those pretty bulky components.

I do remember hearing about how someone was able to implement 2 rotary joysticks on a panel with2 8-ways (and a street fighter button setup), a trackball, spinner, and a 4 way joystick.  To me,  that's a lot on one setup already, but that's just me.
