Rock-ola 464 restore
« on: November 07, 2015, 02:08:46 pm »
Proud new owner of a Rock-ola 464.  Very retro 70's.  It is Discotastic!
Was not working when I picked it up but I got it going.  The grabber mechanism had seized due to hardened grease.  I was able to disassemble enough to force it moving again with some penetrating oil.  Took a while and a lot of patience but it will now play.  It does not sound good and I will be addressing those issues next before considering what to do with it cosmetically.
Here are a few before pics.

Modified the tone arm to have a counterweight adjustment system and removed the existing spring adjustment.
Changed out the stylus to a brand new Shure N44-7.

Did a cap kit on the amplifier.  Sounds a lot better.

That's a fun old machine you got there, Love the way you mounted that filter cap., The tone arm thing however seems a bit "on location" as a fix however, Not shaming, Just a observation. But the idea is golden, and will require some more thought on implementation (on Jenns 440 build anyway)... Cosmetic on that thing is the fun part, it deserves that much. ;),

Thanks.  The tone-arm is function over form for now.  It can always be modified after other things are accomplished to allow it entry to the basement and begin its new life.
What I had in my head was a smooth rod with a single weight that keeps its place by o-ring(s).  One thing that may never match is the patina of the metals of course.  The tonearm on your 440 may be black? or is it bare aluminum too?

FYI, I used a long screw in order to get leverage and keep the tonearm light.  Since then I messed around with it a bit more and it looks like even if you use a weight heavy enough to keep it close to the tone arm you are still only adding a couple ounces.  The concern was the possibility to destroy the sides of the record grooves because the pivot point doesn't move as freely due to the added weight especially on records that aren't pressed on center exactly. This doesn't seem to be a concern though especially since the tonearm will be better balanced and won't have that spring tugging the pivot point to one side.

Had some down time waiting on parts so I came up with a better solution for the tonearm counterweight.  I think this looks like it could have been a stock addition.  The bad news is that this is no longer a manufactured part in the required size and weight.  The good news is that I sourced the remaining stock on this part and am offering it as a kit on my website:

This is limited stock and once they are gone, that's it.

Sourced my missing coin door, coin mech and mech holder.
Was able to modify the mech to accept my 0.900 tokens, yay!
Installed new casters...the original cast iron ones were gnarly in more ways than one.
Painted some bits.
Have instruction cards being reproed since both were cracking apart from age.  Having a couple custom one printed designating tokens instead of quarters.  If the cards are nice I'll offer them on my website.

Here it is stripped down to make it lighter for transporting down to the basement.
