Rarely/Never used buttons with most emulators?
« on: October 28, 2015, 04:14:08 pm »
Need to set up 3 functions in Rocketlauncher

Bezel Advance
Bezel Reverse

Hyperpause.

I need to map these to 3 keys that are rarely (preferably not used at all) in any of the main emulators (MAME, MESS, Retroarch, etc)

I tried the "-" and "=" but these are mapped to Volume in MAME, and speed up gameplay in Nestopia (I think).  When I try to change bezels it screws up gameplay.

Can you think of any  off the top of your head that won't screw up the emulators?

I'm 99% sure I don't have the correct terminology but there are bezel packs for a lot of MAME games, some games have like 5-6 bezels.  You can edit keys in rocketlauncher (which can be used with ANY front end, not just hyperspin) to scroll through them.

He is also using a background for Space invaders, probably offensive to some of you classic gamers. ;)

My logical fix would be to simply erase the input in Nestopia, since u don't need to speed games up.. And delete the - and = in mame input settings as I doubt u use those keys to control volume... Done

Or just use letters such as w,q or basically any odd key that you're not intentionally using/programmed

Why not just pic your favorite bezel and just delete the rest from your art files?

Well that was easy, not sure why I didn't think of that! :badmood:

Its nice to have choice I guess?  Also its nice to have the option to toggle between bezel and no bezel.  Anyways, the above suggestion is a good one.

Why not choose to design for a monitor that will always use the bezels OR for one that doesn't use the functionality at all?

Yes you can absolutely do what was suggested, and if it works for you great!  My questions would be....

Where are these buttons going to be?  Are they shifted functions? Are they aesthetically unpleasing?

I'm not sure what you mean with the first question.  I have a typical 16:9 monitor, but a lot of the bezels in the mame pack try to recreate the original cabinet, so they are still in 4:3, then the actual gameplay is a very small window.  Its cool to show the feature but you wouldn't want to play a long time like that.

Basically you'd have this with a game inlay vs the 4:3 regular game.

A lot of the games have specially designed 16:9 bezels that make the most use of the screen, maybe not true to the original but still better than black.

As for the actual physical buttons, I'd be using the pinball flipper buttons on the side of the CP, as they would be unused with anything but Future pinball.
