Gutted Cabs & Termite Damage
« on: January 08, 2004, 08:58:07 pm »
Just out of curiosity, how far must a cab be infested before a restoration is totally out of the question?

This was such a good find, but upon closer inspection
... I found the " dreaded T " !  >:(

Now I don't know if I should just salvage what I can and part her out, or see if I can drop a huge tent over it like they do to those houses , and spray spray spray !!  ;)

Any ideas, or is she pretty much a goner ?

PS... Someone had converted this to a SegaGenesis Cab, and played Madden96 with it.  >:(

Pic #2 ... The big FIND ... all over the cab ... even little tunnels.  And I was so happy to find this cab at first.

Not worth the risk of getting your home infested. Even placing the cabinet in your garage might be a bad idea.

I'd leave that alone. It has bad news laid all over it in the form of eggs.

Yeah, I was afraid of that.  :'(

Such a shame also. I picked her up hoping to do a MultiWilliams on it. I recognized the style, but wasn't sure what was underneath that horrible red paint. Stripped a little off, and I was in 7th heaven.

At least for a few minutes anyway !

The coindoor looks decent with one small exception, and I'm wondering how difficult it might be to fix. See Below.

Can that be pulled back into shape again?

A pair of pliers will fix that door. Also I have seen those williams set-up switches on the coindoor go for $40 or more on ebay.

Also think about this you now have the perfect williams cab templates. I would take the cab apart at the seams to make templates.

Now you can take sadistic joy in burning your first cab like those nightmarish photos we've all seen.  I would burn it too, those little suckers get in your house and its big time pain in the rear--make sure you take photos of lighting it on fire so we can enjoy the show  ;D

by the way that picture of the eggs really creeped me out--visions of disgusting creatures crawling in your machine...<shudders>

That pic of the eggs was just peachy.. :-[ Reminded me of a clip on stileproject where some guys stuck an m1000 in a dead deer(roadkill), lit it up at night, then the next morning they videotaped all these maggots all over the carcass.   Yech!!!

I have to agree with the others.  Strip the parts (including the control panel, save that) and the sides, torch the rest.

Welll...you MIGHT not have to.  Like ants, termites have a queen hirearchy.  Kill her and the nest will die.  Do you see any live termites in/on the cabinet?  Is there a way to isolate it from your house?

Here's some quick termite links:

Those are great links, but the minute I heard another member suggest leaving it alone ... I took that advice as gospel.

I didn't really want to dance around this cab for to long knowing there might be a potential threat to my other cabs or anything else wood related in my garage.

Basically everything that wasn't made of wood, I stripped out. I'm still a little hesitant about keeping the CP and the speaker section, so I set those aside just in case. Overall, they appear to be in good condition, but I can't tell for sure.
