High Score Competition #177: Rainbow Islands
« on: October 19, 2015, 05:36:54 pm »
High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

------------------------------
Game Name: Rainbow Islands AKA The Story Of Bubble Bobble 2
ROM Name: rbisland
------------------------------

Settings:
    Defaults:
        Difficulty: Medium
        Bonus Life: 100k 1000k
        Complete Bonus: 1 Up
        Lives: 3
        Language: English
        Coin Mode: Mode A

"Secret Codes" are not allowed!!

Controls:
    Joystick: 2 Way
    Buttons: 2 (Fire, Jump)

Haven't played this one before, was told it had a great scoring system. Let's put it to the test.

Following the events of Bubble Bobble, Bubby and Bobby set out to defeat the "Dark Shadow" and rescuing the Rainbow Islands. The Dark Shadow is the entity responsible for the events in Bubble Bobble. The game is set on a chain of ten islands, each one with a different theme. Each island provides four rounds of game-play, and once these are complete the player moves to the next island in the chain. In each round the player must get to the top before the sea level rises and kills them. The islands get progressively more difficult, with enemies moving much faster on the later ones. These are depicted on a map screen before the start of each island.

Players can release rainbows that act as both weapons against the enemies and as a makeshift platform. By jumping on them, they fall down beating any enemies below it. Collecting power-ups increases the player's speed, the speed of the rainbows and how many are spawned. If players take too long in a level, water will start to rise up from the bottom of the stage.

Like Bubble Bobble before it, the game has multiple endings. To get the "True and Happy" ending you must find and complete the three secret islands (although most consumer versions of the game completely lack the secret islands). These islands are not visible until all 7 big diamonds are collected. To get a big diamond, the player must collect seven different-colored small diamonds on the island and finish the round. The small diamonds are found by destroying enemies by dropping a rainbow on them from above or destroying them with various special items. After collecting the small diamonds, a word "NICE" will appear. If the small diamonds are collected in the correct order, you will get to a secret room at the end of each island, which in turn gives you a permanent power up.

One of the features which sets this game apart from many others (and has no doubt been responsible for the game's popularity) is its 'hidden depths'. While initially appearing to be quite a simple game, Rainbow Islands in fact has a vast number of secrets for the player to discover, including secret levels, secret power-ups and riddles. Because of these elements, completing the game properly requires a large amount of dedication from the player. The scoring system also has secrets, which allow vastly higher scores to be achieved than normal.

Well, the good news with the ****ing score systems is that you don't have to be a good player, you just have to figure out how to make many points ...

Liking this so far, the game has a lot of depth to it,.

408,590

Strategy Wiki has some great guides and useful info on this game.

Also, I probably don't need to say this, but the "secret codes"  you can enter on the title screen are not allowed. That's the only thing I don't like, at the very least cheats should exclude you from the highscore list.

Yam & BGoulette: Are you collecting the gems in order or do you just try to get them all (thats what I'm doing for now)?

I just collect them, I suspect that getting a secret item for collecting them in order won't be worth the trouble (unless it yields a massive amount of points, of course).

Yeah, I'm just collecting them whenever I see them. Points is points, and having not read anything about this game, I wouldn't even have a clue what the right order is. I didn't even know there were cheats you could enter at the start screen! :)

I'm a little surprised at how engaging this game is. Not sure why, having cut my teeth on an Atari 5200, but this is a great little game!

If you collect the gems in order from left to right, a door appears in the boss room with bonus points.:

Basically check out this site and the linked pages: See http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Rainbow_Islands
There are A LOT of special items.

This is just ridiculous. It seems that not only do you have to collect the gems in the right order (left to right, right to left), you have to do it in a row. If you accidentally collect one color twice, you can kiss the secret door goodbye.

What works for me is to jump off to the side of him and toss a rainbow, then move in the opposite direction, rinse, repeat. I found that if I dropped rainbows on the ground, I'd climb up them and right into that spider thing's face.

Watch the vid that Waki has posted. The bosses take more damage if they are hit by falling rainbows. So if you have more than one rainbow, 'park' them repeatedly in the air, wait till the boss is in range and jump under the rainbows so that they drop on him. If you have 3 rainbows, park them in the air 3 times at the same place and drop them on the boss, that will almost kill him.

If you only have one rainbow, run to one side, turn around, wait for the boss, jump-shoot a rainbow at him, run to the other side, rinse and repeat.

lost 5 lives on the vampire boss  :badmood:

Edit:

1,971,750

I somehow triggered a large moneybag shower for 500k  ;D

It's definitely worth it to go for the gems in the right order on the first island as it is not that hard. I have around 630k after the boss when I go for the gems in order, and about 450k when I just collect them any which way. Btw Yam, you can recollect gems that you have picked up before, it doesn't prevent you from getting to the door.

Now on the second island things get a lot more difficult and I haven't managed to get them in order yet.

Yep, found that out in the meantime. In fact, I was about to post it when I found that you already got it  :) Doesn't help me that much though, it's a hassle to get them in order, and I'm only at 450k collecting them in order, at about 280-315k without it. I have also managed to kill the boss, climbing up to the door and then missing it  :banghead:

I haven't managed to collect them all in order at all! I keep screwing up and only getting the red gem on 1-1, then I'll either spam so many rainbows I inadvertently grab some out-of-sequence gem. Then I get angry.

That's the problem. Do I want to spend half an hour trying to collect them in order, getting really mad in the process ? On top of that, you better start practicing killing the boss at the first try, because if he nails you, the secret door goes poof.

I have a pretty good route through the first round and usually get the first 5 gems in order there. :)
Getting the door is not only good points-wise, the permanent power-up also helps a lot after you die.

Simple, Bionic Commando is crap, too, but that one I took as a challenge. Once I saw that I could get pretty far, I wanted to beat the sucker. I don't see me getting near R-I's end (in fact I would be proud to clear Monster Island right now), and I really hate the controls. Falling down half a level repeatedly ain't my definition of fun. Makes me quite mad, too.
