Epoxies or Resins or Glues? (Oh my)
« on: January 07, 2004, 11:54:38 pm »
I am creating a PVC axle for a rotating CP and I need to attach it to 5/8 MDF with some type of adhesive. Unfortunately, I know nothing about adhesives so I need help in determining what to use.

The piece to be glued is a threaded piece of PVC cut to 1/2" deep. I have routed out a 1/2" deep square in the MDF, which this piece fits into (round peg in a square hole). I was thinking that I could bond the end of the PVC to the MDF and then fill the empty corners of the square surrounding the PVC with a substance that would bond to it and harden.

The result needs to be very strong as the axle is threaded into this piece which puts some torque on it as well as a prying force away from the MDF. Does anybody have any ideas on what to use?

I'd probably go with a two part five minute epoxy. You can get it at just about any hobby store.

"Liquid Nails" construction adhesive. You can buy it in a sqeezable tube or a cartridge for a caulk gun. It WILL NOT come loose. 2nd choice would be "Gorilla Glue".  If you insist on two part epoxy then make sure you DON'T use the 5 min./quick set epoxy. Get the regular two part epoxy. It takes longer to set and cure but its much stronger then the 5 min. crap.
