USB Pass-through, where to find them?

Im looking for something like this: I found them on ebay by looking for Neutrik NAUSB-W-B, but that's still not it! It's almost what I want except a little less empty space around the connector. Why is there such a big empty space around it!? I'm looking for one with just the plug hole. It can be with our without extension cable in the back.

I've wondered about that as well.  Panel mount USB always have a ton of empty space around the female socket.  Very weird.

I use those cheaper panel mount ones.  Never understood the stupid horse shoe shape AROUND the socket though.

The Neutrik ones are a standard size to fit a panel system. There's that much space because they're also the same size as XLR microphone connectors. With the advent of mp3 players, I'm sure they were designed to fit in spots that would have normally held microphone inputs.

I'm not sure if that's the beef. I'm reading into it that it's not the size of the mount but the empty airspsace around the socket itself.

The first image has almost no airspace and the plastic molding is brought almost flush to the connector.

I always assumed there is some sort of jacket or sleeve on the male end that fills this airspace, like a locking connector or a water zealing boot. I could be wrong, I haven't done stage work in years.

Savannah's got the right idea.  It's not the real estate that the plugs take up, it's all that EXTRA space that is just wasted and empty.  Look at that cheaper plug.  The screw lugs are literally half an inch off to the sides with quarter inch gaps on either side of the socket.  WTF?

Oh, I know that. But keep in mind that all these things are designed with specific/generic form factors in mind. Like the cheap USB plugs pointed out - I've seen those sold installed on brackets that fit on a standard slot. So if one gets damaged on the slot, you can buy a new one to swap it out. These things are engineered to be plug and play with standards in place. They don't care how much empty space you think is there, it's intent is to work with the specs already place. Same with the Neutrik. They just basically use their "D" series housing but throw a USB connector inside. It's simple economics.

Ah that makes sense. I never bother utilizing the extra USB headers on any motherboatd.
