Disabling everything in background

I've built machines that ran on xp (tiny xp) for years with maximus arcade and instant shellar. Everything worked perfect. My newer motherboard wasn't XP compatible so had to go with windows 7, but its one thing after another. Pop ups for "sticky keys", screen turning horizontally because monitor resolutions etc etc.

Any way to get rid of all background rubbish or is there a basic tiny XP equivalent for windows 7?
