switching from xbox to pc CP in one cabinet
« on: September 25, 2015, 07:47:33 pm »
Hi Folks,

I am looking to build out my first full mame cabinet - I purchased a fully loaded / configured Hyperspin drive - so roms and emulators seem to be on that - it works with both keyboard and a xbox wireless joy stick using xpadder when i connect it to my pc.

I want to have both and xbox and a PC (pc running hyperspin) on it, both in the same cabinet and interface with them easily and quickly seamlessly  - I realize I can use a switch box to switch from pc to xbox and use same display,

What I am not quite mentally understanding is how do I switch my CP for each system ? One thought is I wire buttons and joystick to a key board encoder, or do I just use a hacked x box controller connected to buttons and CP joystick? How do you get a CP to work with a xbox and a pc - any comments and help is certainly welcomed.

Thanks,..

I assume you mean xbox360?

You can hack fightpads (solder wires to the contacts).
or
use the pcb out of a fightstick
or
use a pair of PS360s http://www.focusattack.com/akishop-ps360-multi-console-joystick-pcb/
or
use an ipac2 with two paclink adapters http://www.ultimarc.com/console.html

The ipac2 route has the option to use a button combo to switch between the joystick showing up as the d-pad or left thumbstick.
This is useful because some games only support one or the other.
Fightsticks also usually have switches or buttons to do this, but they might be harder to incorporate into a CP.

Take a look at my build (that I haven't updated in a while). The topic was something like sonic and tails 2 player upright. It interfaces a 360 and PC seamlessly with a bunch of relays. Those were a pain in the ass, and not cheap, but probably the most seamless way I could think of to hook up to both systems. If you don't care for relay-controlled (I was controlling it via an arduino), you can hook up wires using standard db25 cable connectors and a db25 switch box. Input = your CP. output = to iPac or Xbox 360 fight pad. Much cheaper but requires a user to manually switch between systems.

Feel free to post if you want more detail and I can see if I have my diagrams lying around.

Edit: I admittedly hadn't looked into PS360s or paclink at the time.

Could you use a game pad style USB encoder for the control panel and an USB KVM switch to do the switching of the monitor and controller?

Thanks for all the replys Guys!!!

I am not the most articulate person - my apologies for that - to clarify I do not mind at all manually switching between sources - what i was confused about is how to have one cp ( joysticks and buttons) and how would i go about setting it up so that  they could be switched....

joystick and buttons go into [what] ---> goes into [?]----> works like this..... (type idea ...)  ( sounds like Ipac 2 solves the wolds arcade problems???

thoughts?
