What can I get in Japan?
« on: January 06, 2004, 02:53:47 pm »
My sister is travelling to Japan. Is there any interesting thing I could tell her to get for me? anything that cannot be bought here in Europe or that would be much cheaper there? I mean something related to Arcade videogames or retrogaming. Of course I'll tell here to get some Arcadia and Famitsu magazines and some manga/anime stuff.

You could get..THE CLAP!?  Oh sorry!  Just kidding...

Seriously: Japan is the land of the Rising Yen.....everything there is basically stupid expensive. And if you did find something interesting there, it would probably cost you a ton of cash to get it sent here to the states...(assuming...your in the states).

Tell your sister to take tons of pictures of all the arcades...get a feel for the Japan vibe circa 2004 ;)

Anything that's made in japan (that is usually imported from there) should be a little cheaper than getting it from a second or third party...

You should get a Treamcast they are black market illegally made dreamcasts that have a screen build into them and they play imports and I think backups right out of the box.  They also come with controllers that look like the original Saturn controllers which is good because the regular DC controllers sucked.  I dont know how easy they are to find though.  You could always ask her to pick up neo geo AES stuff for you I hear you can get it much much cheaper there then you can get it for in the states.

Here is a link to pics you cant buy it there though.

Those Treamcast things are made in China. I very much doubt they will be available in Japan. In Japan they don't sell a lot of third party immitation products.

What to look for in Japan? In urban areas walk around the block and find the local gameshop. Most gameshops also sell used games. Games and electronics can be found much cheaper in Japan (compared to the Netherlands, Europe anyway). Especially now the euro has a good exchange rate to the dollar and yen.

Most Dreamcasts play backups out of the box.

the model shops there are awesome, id say get a really nice resin model of an anime or game character you like. if i went again id probably get a FF7 Tifa statue or something. also definately take pics of their arcades they are a lot different from ours a lot more interactive games oppossed to standard joystick and buttons games
