self adhesive vinyl
« on: January 06, 2004, 12:24:06 pm »
Anyone get a good web source for this? I can find printable vinyl media but not rolls of solid color media.

Lots of rolls of different colored vinyl for sale on ebay all the time.   Just search for sign vinyl.

HappControls sells multiple colors of vinyl which are 40" wide and as long as you need it.    Some of those vinyls (including the Black Pica vinyl wihch I used on my driving cab) came in a 49" wide roll.  I belive I got 49"x11' piece.

I got my Black Pica vinyl when it was on sale for only $2.30 a foot.  I think it is around $5 a foot now.    Anyway, I love how it looks and it went on very easy.

OSCAR used this on a couple of his cabs:

http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&SO=2&&DID=7&CATID=48&ObjectGroup_ID=135&filter=laminate

Only 24" wide, but you can seam it barely visibly.

I do believe that I'll be getting some (after I double check the depth of my cabinet...)

This is a great deal.   If I were doing another cab, I would buy some now just to have it around.

I have some of the stuff from Happ for some of my control panels - it looks very nice, not used it yet...

I'm interested, does anyone use vinyl for anything other than controls panels - eg side panels??

There are 2 D's.  It appears to only be on the 150' rolls.  When you click on "View Price" next to that one it tells you the normal price of $5.00 and the sale price of $2.18 (until 2/29/04).  That's a lot of vinyl.  Anyone know if you can you get it in smaller increments from Happ?  It says "sold per foot" and if you add 1 to your cart, it's still $2.18.  Looks like I'll be getting some!

I guess it helps to look at the width, too.  ;)

That's what I'm planning on using it for...

Laminate is $40 per piece... it would take 3 pieces to cover my cabinet!!!
1 full piece per side & another to cover the front... (Wouldn't be enough scraps from the 2 sides) I can't afford $120 right now to just cover the sides...
However, I can afford $40 total (+ shipping)!!! (for about 18').

For my CPO I plan on getting a custom vinyl CPO printed by http://classicarcadegrafix.com
I don't want plexi on my CP, so I figured this would be my best choice. (They also have plain solid CPOs for pretty cheap!!! (Well... Cheap compared to what I've seen other places...)

Is the stuff from Happs thicker than the stuff from Partsexpress.com?

I used the partsexpress.com stuff and there is a pretty bad seam.  I tried using Oscar's method, but there is still a bad seam there b/c dust gets on the seam and makes it visable.

I would like to use something that will cover up all the recessed mounitng holes in my CP, then put Lexan over that.  Will the Happs stuff cover it or will I still have to use wood filler and sand?

My cabinet is one of those old red (laminate?) Dynamo's... would the best bet here be to clean it up and just cover it with the new vinyl?  Or attempt to remove the red layer somehow (if that's even possible)?

I think it'd be in my best interest (time and effort) to just clean it up, sand down any rough spots and cover with the black Happ vinyl.  Any thoughts?

That's exactly what I did with my last MAME cabinet... (Sold @ Auction)...
It was a badly converted Space Dual with laminate on the sides... It took about 4 hours with a flat blade screw driver & a little blood & sweat, but I got it all off. I've heard that using a heatgun or a torch to melt the glue behind the laminate makes it come off like butter... You might want to try that first! (I didn't have a heat gun at the time I was doing this, so I just did what I had to).

HappControls sells all their vinyl per foot.

Note: Their site lists 150' or 100' next to the part number to indicate what the "maximum" number of feet a buyer "could" purchase if they wanted one long "solid" piece of vinyl.   Basically, if someone wanted 151' of vinyl, they would have to get two pieces (one at most 150' and another piece 1' long).

Anyway, I just called HappControls and verified the Black Pica vinyl 40" is now on sale for $2.18 and is sold by the foot.

Good Luck

I thought about trying it when my paint job didn't turn out too well...I wasn't sure about the inside edges of the sides tho - I would have either had to just paint those bits, or stick the vinyl on before screwing the panels together.  Neither of which I was keen on at the time...

I would like to do the same as you and get a vinyl CP printed - I just severely lack the skill to create the design I have in mind tho  :(

I got a vinyl question.Do real arcade cabs use vinyl too ?
I saw this cruise n exotica machine the other day and it actually was vinyl and I peeled some off too.
but it wasnt like the onces kinkos carry.it was all oily and you can't really scratch off the color.

Anybody know what kind of vinyl that is ?
