Joystick Issues
« on: September 08, 2015, 04:16:55 pm »
Hello everyone.

I'm new so sorry if this has been answered before. I'm building a raspberry pi arcade cabinet with retropie. Ive purchased a low cost-ish stick and buttons.

Its running fine, my only issue is with the joystick. Specifcally, I'm struggling to hit diagonals. Its a Zippy 4-way stick. I find when I'm playing games and pushing towards diagnal, I'm not in that perfect spot it wants me to be to the diagnal doesnt register. This is very annoying. I'm building this for the kids xmas present and I dont want them to be as frustrated as me when I'm playing these games.

Is there any way I can make this easier... perhaps a better stick. I don't think 8 ways work on the Pi do they? So is there a better Joystick I should be looking at?

Go here and read up on Joysticks....

http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/restrictors.html

You can't hit diagonals with a 4-way, that's kind of what they call it a 4 way....

yea man.. id say you should do some reading up if you are new to the hobby.... to answer your questions for now... Your 4 way joystick is a FOUR WAY JOYSTICK. up, down, left right. Alot of early games only used those 4 directions so people use those joys for accurate play. You need 8 way joysticks and to my knowledge, they will work on anything... joysticks simply emulate key presses through an interface. In short, you are wayyy off partner :) but luckily this is a decent place to make progress.. So far youve learned a few fundamentals about joysticks

if you are trying to stay "low costish" most people will say good luck with that. But im not a fan of sarcastic answers, so ill say you can pick up happ joysticks for 8-12 dollars.

Yeah, you do get what you pay for. If you're giving a machine as a gift, I might suggest Happ Supers.

BTW Zippyy can be an 8 way as well, just take of the restrictor or move it to the square gate.

Yup.  I've only used Zippyys in my builds and they work just fine as 4 or 8 way as long as the restrictor is in place.

You should post a pic of how your restrictor is setup.
If the shaft is through the plus part, it's not supposed to hit diaginals.
Remount so the shaft goes through the square.
