New Pinned and Locked Thread?
« on: January 06, 2004, 10:07:39 am »
Given that there are now legal methods for obtaining roms, what would the board admins think about a pinned and locked thread telling people where to get them?
This would allow the moderators to continue to delete specific requests for games that are not on the list; but start the people who are looking for them in the right (legal) direction.

My thinking here is that, if enough people use StarROMS, it might also encourage other companies to release their roms in the same manner.
I think this is something that should not only be encouraged, but almost demanded, from the community as a whole.

I'm against it.  There are enough ROM resources on the web.  This is, essentially, a hardware forum, with some software applications thrown in.

I'm against it also, not for any reason that I can put my finger on, but I think the more mainstream and legitimized emulation becomes, the more companies may try to prosecute distribution/possession of Rom images.  As it is, it's more or less an underground thing and no one takes much notice of it, which is a good thing.

I'd agree. If you want to know about legal roms, one can look on the mame boards or something. This really is more of a hardware forum I think.

I'll add my vote against, and for the same reason.  This isn't the place for it.  This website and forum focuses on specialized hardware, with software only as it is applicable to that hardware (frontends, special MAME builds, and so forth).  The many dedicated MAME forums out there are far more appropriate to this topic.  Let's keep this forum focused.

I'm against it as well.  If we have a link to the legal ROMs, once someone has all of those, they'll come here asking where they can get more.  You give 'em an inch, they'll take a mile.

  I'd vote for this.

There are tons of places out there to get illegal roms.  I've had a difficult time finding places where I can get legal ones.  I think the more publicity on the legit stuff the better.

I'm sort of for this..

Either a pinned thread "If you're looking for ROMS, READ HERE"

with a message saying "If you're looking for roms, there are the legal places to get them: "
X, Y, Z

DO NOT Post any messages asking for any other sources of roms or your message will be deleted, etc.

Then again, I've only seen a few rom requests, but they have been definitely getting more frequent.. Anything that helps curb them would be nice :-D

we shouldnt get involved with people looking for ROMs, if youre on this forum you want to know about wiring, hardware, and how to build a MAME cabinet. we really have nothing to do with roms except one forum for software which is mainly for frontends. im against

I'm greatly against adding Rom information.  I agree wholeheartedly with RacerX's "give them an inch...".  I have seen that occur way too much on other boards ("Such and such site is down, where now?", etc).  This is too good a site to bog it down with, IMO, the potential trouble Rom info brings.
